Mercy Hospital’s 5M Neuro Med/Surg Unit is also a Joint Commission Certified Stroke Unit, so this team cares for many patients with varying neurological needs. This unit is a great place to learn and strengthen nursing skills, such as IVs, NGTs, cardiac drips and stroke care, and prepares you for a higher level of care, such as the ICU, CCU or ED. As a Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA) on the team, you will coordinate with fellow caregivers to create a welcoming, healing and warm environment for patients. This is an excellent opportunity for a nursing student as this is a PRN position that offers a flexible schedule and allows for a balance between school, work and life. Here, you will also have an excellent opportunity to start your nursing career and work in a supportive and caring healthcare setting. 

 

A PRN caregiver in this position works variable days and hours, which may include weekends. 

 

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Provide or assist with patient care under the supervision of an RN. Patient care may include vital signs, weight, assisting patients with personal care and activities of daily living, patient transfers/transport, pulse oximetry, point of care testing, dressing changes, applying external monitoring devices and removing urinary Foley catheter.  

  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental and emotional conditions to an RN.  

  • Assist with keeping patients’ rooms clean and orderly. 

 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High School Diploma or GED 

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross - If you do not hold this certification, you must obtain it during your new hire period 

  • Nursing students: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required prior to hire
