About the role

OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY

 

Duke Access and Accommodation Services (DAAS, formerly the Disability Management System), provides guidance and assistance to ensure Duke University meets its responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Amendments Act (ADA), Section 504 Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and similar laws. This includes ensuring that physical spaces and structures, parking facilities, transportation systems, and events are accessible to individuals with disabilities. The ADA Physical Accessibility Director is expected to be an integral part of Duke’s compliance framework while providing competent, consistent, and compassionate service to Duke University, including Duke University Health System and any affiliated programs or locations.

 

 

WORK PERFORMED

  • Ensures that new construction projects as well as preexisting structures and spaces are in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG), the North Carolina Building Code-Accessibility Section, University Design Guidelines, University/Health System Standards and/or Guidelines, and other relevant federal, state, and municipal codes or regulations.
  • Where appropriate, offers suggestions for increased accessibility that may exceed legal requirements and/or is in line with Universal Design principles.
  • Collaborates with relevant campus partners, including University Architect, Engineering and Operation, Facilities Management, Fire and Safety, Athletics, Parking and Transportation, etc., to ensure that ADA accessibility is considered and incorporated throughout event implementation, program development, and capital planning. Work with partners to implement any accessibility modifications or accommodations.
  • Provides individualized assistance and facilitates the provision of physical access accommodations to employees, students, visitors, and patients. This also includes providing individuals with individualized parking and transportation arrangements and access.
  • Maintains liaison among all parties during the project design and implementation processes; in determining priorities for changes, to facilitate any changes or modifications during construction or renovation, and to facilitate open communication and expeditious resolution of project problems. Provides advice in all matters pertaining to adherence to ADA/NC Accessibility Code specifications.
  • Identifies strategic opportunities to increase accessibility. Obtains buy-in for accessibility projects with partners and University leadership.
  • Maintains current knowledge of all aspects of ADA guidance and specifications as they pertain to facility renovation and construction, parking, transportation, and event access. Ensures ADA access information is available to customers, contractors, and other relevant partners. Updates DAAS website with any information impacting physical access, parking, or transportation.
  • Attends planning meetings for significant events, including Athletics events and Commencement, to ensure ADA accessibility is taken into account and accommodations are provided. Provides real-time assistance to visitors, customers, and partners during events on issues of physical accessibility.
  • Provides training across the institution to increase understanding of accessibility requirements and Universal Design suggested practices.
  • Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

 

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Work requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Architecture, or Design or a combination of education and direct work experience.  A Master’s Degree is preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE

Work requires at least five years of progressively responsible experience in work related to ADA/Section 504 physical access compliance, preferably in an institution of higher education with an affiliated hospital or medical center.
