JOB SUMMARY: Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations as they relate to the District’s environmental and science safety programs. Responsible for the chemical hygiene plans on a school and District level, safety inspections, hazardous waste disposal, confined space monitoring and training, related recordkeeping, and assisting with various environmental issues.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The subsequent duties outline the fundamental operations of the position and exemplify the nature of the tasks carried out. 1.

Respond to environmental hazards and concerns from District staff. Daily 15%

2.

Assist the District’s environmental team with indoor air quality (IAQ) issues, lead in drinking water testing, lead paint regulations, and radon testing requirements. Daily 7%

3.

Assist with Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA) compliance. Implement procedures to update asbestos management plans, update archives, provide two (2) hour asbestos awareness training for all new maintenance employees, conduct six (6) month and three (3)-year building inspections, collect samples, and provide consistent surveillance of asbestos containing materials inventory including quantity and location.

Assist the Grounds, Maintenance, and Plumbing Departments as needed and with snow removal.

Work closely with the county health department to facilitate high and low risk safety inspections. Facilitate corrective actions with the proper department. Serve as liaison between science safety cadre, curriculum and instruction, risk management, maintenance, environmental, and local health departments. Daily 5%

Work with individual schools on maintaining chemical hygiene programs to ensure proper labeling, accurate chemical inventories, up-to-date documentation, safe chemical storage, and functional emergency procedures. Weekly 7%

7.

Research new regulations and maintain links with appropriate agencies for input and information on potential laws and regulations that may impact the District. Weekly 5%

8.

Conduct school safety audits annually or as frequently as necessary to include evaluation of chemical storage areas, chemical inventory, proper documentation, safety equipment, laboratory equipment, emergency procedures, and Safety Data Sheet (SDS) management. Produce reports and facilitate corrective actions with the appropriate department. Monthly 20%

9.

Manage school and District-level chemical programs which include waste paint, universal waste, hazardous waste, and non-hazardous waste, while keeping documentation and SDS sheets updated. Investigate alternative disposal and use options for all waste streams. Facilitate proper documentation and disposal of waste materials. Monthly 8%

10.

Implement and manage districtwide confined space program
