JOB SUMMARY: Under consultative direction, develops, administers, and monitors the associated programs in their section. Provides technical assistance on matters related to the program. Conducts walk-through inspections and analyzes data to evaluate health and safety factors in the health system's programs and procedures. Assists with development and is responsible for the implementation of programs for federal, state, and local compliance. Conducts risk assessments, audits, trend analysis, accident/incident investigations, and site inspections of operations that affect facility design, employee safety, and patient care outcomes. Maintains documentation on the hazards and follow-up reports along with inspection data. Acts as team leader, technical advisor, and subject matter expert on projects.
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
MINIMUM ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in related field with 3 years of related field experience or bachelor’s degree with 5 years of related field experience.
REPORTS TO: EH&S Manager
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION AND/OR REGISTRATION: Professional certification or training certifications related to healthcare and EH&S section specialty preferred. Certified Hazardous Material Manager and 40 hr. EPA HAZWOPER preferred.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- General Organization Standards: Adheres to the general organizational standards to promote a cooperative work environment by utilizing communication skills, interpersonal relationships, and team building. Follows organization and departmental policies and procedures. Contributes to the overall quality of service. Assumes responsibility for keeping informed about changes in policies and procedures. - Implement Program: Implements and supports the management program that promotes a safe environment for patient care, education, and research. Contributes to the appropriate management plans, departmental and Wake area goals and objectives related to safety. Develops and implements all safety and environmental programs, prepares reports and all correspondence required to ensure the department meets regulatory, accreditation, and health system performance standards. Provides reports of required safety programs and departmental performance assessments to management and informs Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist committees and leadership of action required when needed or instructed.
- Implements occurrence/injury and risk exposure reduction initiatives. Makes recommendations for changes in occurrence/injury and risk exposure reduction efforts. Reviews, investigates, and/or responds to employee, visitor, and non-employee near misses, accidents, injuries, exposures, and complaints concerning hazards.
- Audit Inspection Program: Ensures that audits and inspection tours are performed to identify hazards and code deficiencies by implementing and refining processes to confirm compliance with the published standards and the respective EH&S safety program to assess risk for all work environments. Assists to develop and implement audit inspection programs. Develops and maintains policies and procedures to uphold or improve compliance of regulations set forth by local, state, federal, and accreditation agencies. Collects and compiles data necessary for monitoring compliance with regulations to provide strategic and timely reporting to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist committees. Develops and implements processes to manage, track and correct non-compliance.
- Monitor & Collect Data: Monitors and reviews risk exposure reports to identify opportunities to prevent or minimize future exposure. Responds to data identifying serious events and/or trends that need action requiring analysis and/or performing assessments or worksite evaluations to recommend corrective actions or improvements based on principles of professional practice. Collaborates with Primary Investigators, managers, and Teammate Health Services as needed to resolve hazards and safety concerns in the workplace.
- Maintain Equipment: Maintains, operates, calibrates, and tracks a variety of equipment and supplies using the electronic EH&S management system and other related tools. Participates in planning for the departmental budgetary process for cost effective maintenance and/or replacement of the equipment as needed. Maintains the components of the electronic EH&S management system.
- Plan & Facility Review & Assess: Reviews new construction, renovation, and acquisition projects to provide proactive expertise. Monitors contractor activities to ensure compliance with internal and regulatory guidelines.
