Fiber Construction/Maintenance Specialist
Colorado Springs Utilities' Network Transport Services team is hiring a Fiber Construction/Maintenance Specialist to ensure the quality and maintenance of our fiber optic and telecommunication services. Our team is responsible for supporting the safety, reliability, and performance of our fiber, microwave, and telecommunications infrastructure. You will have the opportunity to work with a team of fiber network professionals through installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing components of our fiber-optic network.
A day in the life of a Fiber Optic Technician may include:
- Performs infrastructure maintenance:
- Cable Installation – verifying conduit paths, installing fish, pulling cable/tracer. This includes the use of compressors, reel trailers and/or cable stands depending on the environment
- Handhole – replace damaged handholes and/or damaged lids, cleanout, cable dressing, mounting hardware repair, conduit plugs, removal of wildlife
- MST Peds – labeling, verification of locks and internal mounting hardware, replace damaged peds, removal of wildlife
- FDH Cabinets – check cabinet locks, verify cabinets are secured/mounted to handholes, inspect for any vandalism or general damage
- Damaged Conduit Repair – locate and expose damage location using equipment ranging from demo saw, hydro-vac, mini-excavators
- Supports Fiber Techs with equipment installation (ODF cabinets, FDH cabinets, new MST peds)
- Utility Pole Construction:
- Use of single-person bucket trucks
- Use of extension strand hook ladder
- Installation of messenger strand
- Lashing Fiber
- Framing / Installing mounting hardware
Who You Are
- Highly qualified candidates will offer years of underground utility construction experience and knowledge of working on Fiber Optic Infrastructure
- Experience with the placement of outside plant fiber optic cable is preferred
- Operating hydro excavation equipment is highly desirable
- Knowledge and experience performing semi-skilled construction and/or landscaping duties
- Ensuring all work is performed in accordance with safety regulations
- A valid, unrestricted driver’s license is required for this role
- Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred and the ability to obtain and maintain it within one year of hire is required; we will provide the training/certification for your CDL
