About the role

Job Summary:

Provides professional nursing care within the Behavioral Health unit, coordinates care planning and implementation with other disciplines.  The Charge Registered Nurse will be responsible for clinical and management of nursing services in area of responsibility.  Responsible and accountable for coordinating and supervising the nursing care provided to patients on assigned nursing unit.  Participates in establishment and implementation of Hospital and Nursing objectives and policies and procedures along with unit identified Performance Improvement Projects.  Assists Nurse Manager with appropriate unit initiatives including clinical rounds, orientation of new hires, evaluation of annual staff performance, physician collaboration, educational needs of staff, participates in appropriate meetings and or committees. Actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, behaves in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Pipeline Health, upholding standards of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) patient communication.

Essential Functions: 

  • Serves as a member of the multidisciplinary team in planning patient care through Clinical rounding with staff, management, and MDs to ensure patient safety and satisfaction.
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and delegates workflow of the unit.
  • Assisting staff with assimilating evidenced based knowledge into decisions for the provision of patient care and in evaluating practice and creating strategies for further improvement.
  • Manage Crisis in the unit by coordinating the plan, implementation, evaluation of solution to conflicts.
  • Participates in the interview process for new hires and assists with the orientation process.
  • Participates in the staff evaluation process by giving feedback regarding staff performance.
  • Assists management in ensuring compliance with organizational policies, standards, regulations, and professional standards of care.
  • Participates in organization Performance Improvement by initiating and/or participating in coaching/counseling staff through disciplinary process.
  • Keep staff on the shift alert to roles in disaster and fire plans.
  • Supervises all staff and ensures that staff complete their assigned duties and assigned documentation by end of shift.
  • Inspects crash cart to ensure safety seals has not been broken or tampered with and document findings.
  • Respond proactively to patient satisfaction concerns.
  • Oversees medication nurse and alerts MD if untoward side effects are evident in patients.
  • Documents unusual patient occurrences and follows policies and procedures as well as proper notifications, when pertinent.
  • Assesses voluntary patient’s behavior per LPS guidelines when requested by attending psychiatrist.
  • Serves as a role model for the Mission, Vision and Values of the organization and fulfills other job duties as requested within Scope of Practice.
  • Maintains current competencies as well as updated knowledge in specific area of practice.
  • Uses clear, concise, professional communication with coworkers, patients, all customers internal and external.
  • Uses AIDET in interactions with patients and family members.
  • Acts with a sense of urgency when performing tasks.
  • Basic unit/department maintenance such as keeping files, drawers, cabinets free from unnecessary clutter. Reports on any equipment and or environmental issues for repair.
  • Abides by HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) regulations.
  • Speaks up to stop the line and escalates potential safety events if necessary.
  • Completes and attends monthly training assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
