Overview:

The Stable Isotope Materials and Chemistry Group is seeking a Stable Isotope Material Science Engineer who will focus on dispensing operations and technical services for enriched stable isotopes spanning nearing every element on the periodic table. Specifically, the selected individual will dispense, package, and ship isotopically enriched materials to customers worldwide. These orders may also require the selected individual to develop and perform material processing of enriched stable isotopes to various chemical and physical forms including: thin films, rolled foils, thick discs, wires, ceramics, and gaseous forms.

 This position is part of the Enrichment Science and Engineering Division, which serves the nation by advancing enrichment technologies and providing enriched stable isotope products. We lead the R&D and production process development for delivering stable isotopes for medical, industrial, and DOE mission critical applications. As part of our research and processing team, you will work in the rapidly growing field of stable isotope enrichment with a focused group of scientists, engineers, and technicians on meaningful, fast-paced technical projects and operations in support of the DOE Isotope Program.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Maintain the National Stable Isotope Repository inventory, including materials handling, documentation, and records
  • Dispense and convert materials into various chemical and physical forms as required by customers worldwide
  • Research and develop advanced processing methods, focused on low-loss techniques and maintaining chemical purity
  • Testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of research equipment
  • Perform lab space management duties that include procurement of supplies and equipment, establishment of new and adaptation of existing standard operating procedures
  • Support development of reports, presentations, and operator aids or guidelines on technical services/conversion activities
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  • Demonstrate dedication to strong teaming and a positive culture within the organization

Basic Qualifications:

  • A B.S. degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Material Science, or a related technical discipline with at least 2 years of technical experience in a lab environment. A comparable combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • Physical dexterity to handle small quantities of exotic and expensive materials
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to constantly evolving needs
  • Ability to meticulously maintain detailed laboratory records
  • Ability to solve basic research problems
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A M.S. degree in Chemistry, Engineering, Material Science, or a related technical discipline
  • Experience in inorganic synthesis and process monitoring
  • Experience in chemical characterization techniques and quantitative analyses
  • Experience in handling air and water reactive chemicals
  • Familiarity working with a variety of non-traditional metals
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the Laboratory
