The Role

Moderna is expanding our footprint to Seattle to further our mission of delivering the greatest possible impact to people through mRNA medicines! Our new technology hub in Seattle will focus on software product development for our Commercial, Data & Machine Learning, Cloud Infrastructure, Security, and Engineering Excellence (dev tools) products and platforms.

Moderna’s Cloud and Digital Infrastructure (CDI) is an organization at the core of transforming Moderna’s enterprise use of the Cloud and on-premises compute. Through Moderna Mindsets, and a passion to change the future of medicine, CDI focuses on removing viscosity and enabling secure and scalable foundations for Moderna’s broad range of internal customers.

We are looking to add an Associate Director to our team to accelerate our organization and help grow our engineering talent. In this role, you will work on exciting, cutting-edge technology initiatives/products from the ground up to empower our technology roadmap across the organization, with the ultimate goal of transforming patients’ lives.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Manage a team of software development engineers (SDEs) to deliver innovative products and platforms.

  • Grow the career development of the SDEs including maturing their design and coding skills.

  • Lead regular checkpoints with SDEs, including code reviews and daily standups.

  • Successfully manage SDEs using best-in-industry software engineering tools and processes, such as source control and code review.

  • Be responsible for the overall technical design strategy and details to deliver against customer needs.

  • Manage the process of product delivery end to end and teams deliverables, not just limited to development of new code.

  • Drive your team to deeply understand customer needs and creatively design, build, and deliver solutions.

  • Partner with Product Managers and Technical Program Managers around design and delivery of product functionality.

  • Demonstrate strong understanding of the business and customer value of new initiatives.

  • Leverage tradeoffs among aspects of the code bar, such as efficiency versus maintainability.

  • Drive the team to diagnose and identify the root cause of problems with exiting software.

Here’s What You’ll Need (Minimum Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related technology or scientific field OR 5 years of equivalent professional experience in lieu of a degree.

  • A minimum of 9 years of relevant job experience.

  • A minimum of 4 years of overseeing (managing) engineers and or their work.

  • Experience with modern full-stack software applications both built or off the shelf.

  • Experience documenting technical systems, user workflows, and user requirements.

  • Experience with traditional IT infrastructure as well as the Cloud, preferably AWS.

Here’s What You’ll Bring to the Table (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Masters’ degree in computer science or other related technology discipline

  • Two or more years management of direct people management experience.

  • Experience communicating with application users to understand and collect their requirements and requests.

  • Experience working in life sciences, pharma/biotech, or high-tech industries with a preference for experience in one or more of eCommerce, data/machine learning platforms, or cloud infrastructure.

  • Experience in a regulated environment.

  • Experience working in a matrixed organization.

Under Washington State law, Moderna is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for the jobs covered by this description.  Base compensation for these positions in Washington State range from $158,000 to $284,500. Actual salary determinations will take into account factors such as work location, prior education and experience, job-related knowledge, and demonstrated skills.  Compensation decisions are made on the facts and circumstances of each case.

In addition to base compensation Moderna employees are eligible for a comprehensive incentive compensation package including an annual cash bonus, new hire
