About the role

Description

Job Type: Full-Time | Location: Sweetwater, TX | Department: Construction | Reporting to: Construction Manager (HV)  | Work Location Type: #onsite

IREN is a leading AI Cloud Service Provider, delivering large-scale GPU clusters for AI training and inference.  IREN’s vertically integrated platform is underpinned by its expansive portfolio of grid-connected land and data centers in renewable-rich regions across the U.S. and Canada.

The High Voltage (HV) QA/QC Inspector plays a critical role in delivering safe, reliable power to some of the most advanced, mission-critical data center infrastructure in the industry. Serving as a key quality authority, you verify that high-voltage substations and distribution systems are constructed, tested, and documented to the highest standards prior to energization. Working at the intersection of construction, engineering, and commissioning, you partner closely with field teams and contractors to ensure workmanship quality, resolve issues in real time, and support the successful turnover of complex HV systems that directly enable 24/7 operations.

With 100% renewable energy, we build, own and operate our data centers and take pride in being at the forefront of sustainable solutions for the ever-evolving applications of high-performance compute. We believe that human progress is invaluable, but it should be done in the right way – responsibly, sustainably and having a positive impact on the communities we operate in.

Responsibilities

  • Perform QA/QC inspections for HV construction activities, including foundations, grounding, conduit, cable installation, terminations, switchgear, breakers, CTs/PTs, transformers, control panels, and protection systems.
  • Verify installations comply with approved IFC drawings, specifications, vendor requirements, NEC/NESC, and project quality plans.
  • Witness and document electrical testing activities, including insulation resistance, VLF/Hi-Pot (where applicable), breaker timing, relay testing, SF6 checks, transformer oil sampling, and commissioning functional tests.
  • Review contractor inspection and test plans (ITPs), test procedures, and method statements; ensure required hold and witness points are observed.
  • Generate punch lists, track closure progress, and validate corrective actions prior to energization and turnover.
  • Maintain accurate QA/QC documentation, including inspection reports, test records, redlines/as-builts, NCRs, turnover packages, and commissioning checklists.
  • Identify non-conforming work, document findings, and coordinate corrective actions with contractors and construction leadership.
  • Support energization readiness by verifying equipment labeling, torquing, grounding, clearances, control power functionality, and alignment of protective relay settings (as directed).
  • Coordinate with utilities, OEMs, and third-party testing firms to support acceptance testing and commissioning milestones.
  • Provide field-level guidance to improve workmanship quality, reduce rework, and promote a “right-the-first-time” culture.
  • Ensure all activities comply with site safety policies, OSHA requirements, and applicable electrical safe work practices.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience supporting high-voltage electrical construction, commissioning, testing, or substation installation (13.8kV–345kV preferred).
  • Demonstrated experience inspecting or verifying HV workmanship quality, reviewing testing documentation, and supporting system turnover and energization readiness.
  • Journeyman or Master Electrician license, or Journeyman Lineman license preferred.
  • NETA certification or equivalent HV testing background preferred.
  • NICET (Electrical Power Testing or Electrical Construction) preferred.
  • OSHA 30, NFPA 70E, or approved HV safety training preferred.
  • Strong understanding of HV construction standards, quality practices, and commissioning/turnover workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret IFC drawings, one-lines, wiring diagrams, grounding plans, cable schedules, and test reports.
  • Familiarity with acceptance testing standards and commissioning processes for HV equipment.
  • Skilled at identifying deficiencies, writing clear punch items, and tracking closure to completion.
  • Strong documentation discipline with the ability to build organized, audit-ready turnover packages.
  • Confident communication skills to coordinate effectively with contractors, construction leadership, engineering, and operations.
  • High attention to detail with a safety-first mindset in energized and high-risk environments.
