About the role

The Production Specialist (PS) position requires basic knowledge of theories, principles and concepts and applies general knowledge of business and industry practices within production. It is responsible for carrying out various production processes for Medical and Nursing books, under the instruction and direction of more senior roles. The role may be the point of contact for projects of limited scope and complexity. Focused areas include review of copyediting, composition, and layout against requirements; accurate recordkeeping in various systems; and monitoring and following up on the production schedule details and delays. Onsite duties include processing LOC shipments and filing copyright certifications.

Essential Duties

  • Support book production processes (including digital publications) from submission of manuscript through print and online release, by in-house and/or external resources.

  • Review copyediting quality against style guides/style sheets and provide feedback as necessary.

  • Review proofs and address vendor queries; provide quality-related feedback to vendor.

  • Ensure that the final products meet the standards and approval of relevant departments.

  • Coordinate the production of the product by in-house and/or external resources.

  • Support the processes and administration of releases to manufacturing and eBook platforms.

  • Responsible for output (documents, analysis, product) in specific work area to appropriate time and quality targets. Work is reviewed by management or more senior peers.

  • Plan and prioritize own work and meet agreed timescales.

  • Update high-level production reports with status information about assigned titles.

Other Duties

  • Participate in ad hoc projects as needed; other duties as assigned.

Education

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts, Communication, English or a related discipline, or equivalent experience required.

Experience

Minimum Experience:

  • Understanding of book/journal publishing production in a deadline-driven environment, including relationships with vendors, quality control, monitoring performance, providing feedback

  • Basic level skills with MS Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, and Teams

  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills 

  • Strong communication skills, verbal and written

  • Tools and processes enabling remote connection to internal systems

Preferred Experience:

  • Copyediting scientific or health sciences books or journals

  • Working with editorial and/or production operations teams

  • Customer service skills

  • Content management system and database experience

Other Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Willingness to learn the breadth and depth of book production

Travel Requirements

  • Possibly 1-2 times a year
