What’s the role?

We are looking for a Software Engineer to join our Payments Compliance squad. You will be joining a multi disciplined group of engineers, product managers, designers and analysts. As a Software Engineer on our squad, you will help us build scalable, fault tolerant, maintainable systems that service millions of small businesses on our platform.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager for Payments Compliance. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our competitive benefits that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy. The Payments Compliance squad's mission is to empower millions of sellers and buyers to be compliant with local laws and regulations. Doing this in a global marketplace and at Etsy’s scale is no easy feat. As Etsy expands to more and more countries, our team is critical to the success of that growth. 

Here are a few questions our team helps answer:

• How do we ensure we are compliant with PCI standards as we transition between new versions of the standard. 
• How do we build trust with our buyers and sellers by ensuring we do not store any excess data about their card or account while maintaining our PCI compliance?
• What waterfall of information best describes who our sellers/buyers are and what impact does this have on their obligations to be compliant with local governments and their regulations.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• You will work collaboratively with multiple engineers at a range of levels to support you in gaining critical onboarding about how Etsy designs and writes software. 
• Contribute at all levels of our web application stack, ranging from front-end web interfaces (HTML, CSS, TypeScript, React) to back-end technologies (PHP and MySQL) too. It's okay if you don't have experience with all of these!
• Continuously learn from your teammates and share your own insights with them.
• Push code to production early and often using our continuous deployment systems.
• Empathy, ownership, communication, and technical skill are valued equally.
• Participate in code and design reviews and maintain high standards of code quality.
• Of course, this is just a sample of the kinds of work this role will require! You should assume that your role will encompass other tasks, too, and that your job duties and responsibilities may change from time to time at Etsy's discretion, or otherwise applicable with local law.

Qualifications

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• Experience working with vendor integrations, especially payments-related vendors is a strong plus.
• You care as much about building great products as you do writing great code.
• Code quality is critically important to you, and you can help your team and others improve the quality of existing codebases.
• Have a knack for organization and breaking down large problems into smaller ones.
• Can be autonomous, determined and a fast learner.
• Can confidently communicate efficiently and effectively.
• Enjoy learning about and interacting with the people who use your product.
