JOB SUMMARY/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Clinical Dental Assistant provides chairside assistance and clinical support for undergraduate dental students, residents, and faculty in the Endodontic clinic and labs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Assists operator at the dental chair; arranges instruments, materials, and medications on prepared tray and aids dental operator (dental student/faculty).  
  2. Provides chairside assistance to faculty and students. Seats and prepares patients for treatment.
  3. Assists students and residents with clinical photographic procedures; takes diagnostic radiographs including Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) when appropriate.
  4. Sets up dental units: bag chair, place protective sheets on Alabama carts, cover keyboard and monitors, etc. 
  5. Stocks procedure room and cabinets, monitors supply levels and place order, makes entries of procedures, and assists with receiving and indexing patient records. 
  6. Sterilizes tools and surgical instruments and disinfects operatory and equipment according to OSHA sterilization regulations. 
  7. Transports sensors from x-ray to lecture hall/labs, sets up supplies, and x-ray boxes. 
  8. Ensures adherence to universal precautions.
  9. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION: High School Diploma or GED. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)

EXPERIENCE: One (1) year experience working chairside in a dental practice. Must maintain registration as a licensed dental assistant in the State of Tennessee. Nitrous Oxide Monitoring and Radiology Certification required. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED). (Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) with the Dental Assistant National Board Certification (DANB) is preferred. Graduate of CODA accredited school preferred.) 

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: A Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) in the State of Tennessee, with certification in radiology and nitrous oxide monitoring is required. CDA (DANB) certification preferred. (PROOF OF LICENSURE IS REQUIRED)

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES: 

  • Ability to work efficiently in a clinical setting. 
  • Ability to work as a team promoting quality oral health care. 
  • Understanding of health and safety regulations. 
  • Ability to interact with patients, doctors, and staff in an effective manner.
  • Must have strong communication skills and exceptional hand skills. 

WORK SCHEDULE: This position may be occasionally required to work evenings.
