Under supervision, samples and performs tests on a variety of construction materials (soils, asphalt, concrete, etc.) in the field or laboratory to ensure compliance with various requirements, plans, specifications, and contracts; and keeps written records and reports of activities.

Examples of duties

Knowledge of
  • Methods and procedures used to collect and sample construction materials 
  • Construction materials field and laboratory testing methods and procedures 
  • Types and grades of commonly used construction materials 
  • Mathematical procedures related to the accurate performance and interpretation of a variety of calculations in the field or laboratory 
  • Methods, tools, and equipment used in construction projects 
  • Applicable Federal, State, and local regulations and ordinances
Ability to
  • Determine and conduct appropriate tests based on the type of construction material and project requirements 
  • Make accurate mathematical calculations 
  • Read blueprints, plans, and specifications 
  • Gather data, keep accurate records, and prepare reports and simple drawings 
  • Detect flaws in construction materials 
  • Follow verbal and written instructions 
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing 
  • Promote, establish, and maintain effective working relationships

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of full-time, paid experience sampling, testing or inspecting construction materials such as soil, asphalt, and concrete. 

Note: Successful completion of college coursework from an accredited college in the fields of engineering, mathematics, chemistry, physics, construction technology or other related physical sciences may substitute for up to one year of the required experience on the basis of 30 semester (or 45 quarter) units is equivalent to one year of work experience.

Note: If the word “experience” is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable.  Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

Background Check: The County may conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. License Requirement: A valid California Driver License, Class C or higher, may be required at the time of appointment.
