Description

Terra is a platform jointly built by Verily, the Broad Institute and Microsoft to catalyze the shift of biomedical data analysis to the cloud. The Broad Institute is the world’s premier genomics research institution, with a long history of research software development. The partnership is developing Terra for a growing stable of customers, including the million-participant All of Us project (one of the largest longitudinal studies ever undertaken) as well as a number of commercial organizations engaged in drug research and development.

Terra’s services span cloud data and compute management, tool integration (e.g. Jupyter notebooks and genomic analysis pipelines), identity and access control, workspaces for collaboration and data publishing, biomedical data exploration and more. The project is at a key technical inflection point, with challenging new projects in executing on a multi-cloud strategy and building command-line and web user interfaces that fit the complex needs of modern computational biology research. Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development of a cutting-edge workbench for genomic analysis, using a modern tech stack (React-Typescript/Java/Terraform).
• Balance features and critical non-functional characteristics such as scalability, performance, maintainability, compliance, etc.
• Collaborate with beta testers, researchers and the product team to distill requirements.
• Engage with partner organizations such as Vanderbilt University, NIH and the Broad Institute to advance strategic projects.
• Model and influence adoption of software engineering practices across the broader All of Us team.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications:

• BA/BS degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience in software engineering.
• At least 5 years experience as a software engineer in an industry setting.
• Expertise in building software and systems on any of: GCP, AWS or Azure.
• Experience delivering major systems/subsystems as a technical lead for a team of engineers.
• Clear written communication, especially in design and architecture documents.

Preferred qualifications:

• Demonstrated expertise in the Java and React ecosystems.
• Past experience participating in open-source projects and/or cross-organizational partnerships.
• Experience with (or passion for) providing tools to scientists on the forefront of computational biology & genomics research.

 

The US base salary range for this full-time position is $148,000- $227,000 + bonus + equity + benefits. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level and location. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for the position across all US locations. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
