Position Overview
The Legal team, located in Atlanta, GA, is seeking a Director and Assistant General Counsel, ESG & Government Relations! The AGC will focus on growing and operationalizing Novelis’ corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) program by bringing together internal partners to implement a comprehensive ESG operating model. The AGC will also partner with the Novelis government affairs team to advise on legal considerations and enable a more strategic, efficient, and consistent relationship between the legal and government affairs groups!
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Responsibilities:
- Drive the creation and implementation of a comprehensive ESG operating model with clearly defined roles and responsibilities to enable accurate and efficient ESG reporting
- Lead the development and publication of mandatory ESG reporting and disclosure; partner with sustainability team on voluntary ESG disclosure initiatives
- Provide legal and strategic advice to internal partners on global ESG laws and regulations (e.g., CSRD, CSDDD, SEC Climate Disclosure Rule)
- Monitor and advise on new developments and trends concerning ESG laws, regulations and programs
- Develop and manage ESG working committees addressing each corporate ESG category to facilitate discussion among internal subject matter experts across the organization
- Lead ESG program governance to ensure regular and effective cross-functional coordination to meet the expectations of Novelis’ regulators, customers and other key external partners
- Regularly report to senior leadership regarding ESG strategy, initiatives and compliance
- Engage with external shareholders on behalf of Novelis regarding ESG matters (e.g., customers, regulators, investors, rating agencies, proxy advisors, membership organizations, trade associations, NGOs)
- Support the selection and integration of technologies and tools to assist ESG data tracking and reporting
- Manage outside consultants and law firms assisting with ESG matters
- Serve as the primary legal point of contact for the Novelis government affairs team
- Provide legal perspective to assist government affairs strategy, planning and advocacy
- Facilitate participation by other members of legal team with government affairs initiatives
- Participate with government affairs in government engagement, conferences, trade association meetings and other external events, as needed
Minimum qualifications:
- At least ten years law firm or in house experience, with substantial exposure to ESG governance, strategy and compliance
- Strong knowledge and understanding of ESG legal requirements and reporting frameworks
- Prior experience advising on government affairs strategy and initiatives
- Ability to work cross-functionally to develop and implement corporate programs and implement pivotal initiatives
- Experience communicating with senior leaders and a variety of external partners
- Ability to take sophisticated subjects and effectively communicate them in an understandable manner to a broad range of audiences
- Strong organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, and attention to detail
- Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and build collaborative relationships across the organization
