A Brief Overview

The Chief Medical Officer has primary responsibility to strengthen medical/dental staff relationships and engagement with the Avera Region including supporting the leased and owned facilities; enhance quality throughout the patient care continuum which results in market share growth; and implement clinical strategies and excellence that support Avera's strategic plan.

What you will do

  • Responsible for strengthening medical/dental staff relationships. Collaborates with the CEO to address issues involving the clinical relationships. Has a presence in rural communities in the Avera Region as needed.
  • Promotes effective communication and collaborates with medical staff/dental staff; clinical, administrative and service line leadership; and the Board to address issues facing the Avera Region.
  • Develops quality initiatives (quality outcomes, safety and patient experience) that support Avera system quality goals and responsible to improve measurable parameters of performance within the Region. Works in partnership with quality staff, medical/dental staff and leadership to ensure there is ownership of clinical protocols and quality benchmarks are effectively administered.
  • Collaborates with Avera Region leadership to identify and develop new growth opportunities in clinical services, market share, and promoting referral relationships within the Avera system.
  • Works collaboratively with leadership and clinical staff to facilitate appropriate placement of patients in the Avera system through the continuum of care.
  • Leverages Avera’s culture of compassion to create a preferred experience and retention of clinical staff.
  • Responsible for working with medical/dental staff leadership and committees to identify, address, and resolve issues relating to medical staff governance, quality, conduct, and by-laws. Responsibilities include oversight of the functions of privileging; utilization review and quality assurance functions; ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and other regulatory agencies; assuring adherence to by-laws.
  • Champions clinical integration and innovation by leveraging technology advancements in care management.
  • Promotes healthy behaviors of medical/dental staff, high quality clinical performance and facilitates conflict resolution in collaboration with the CEO and AMG leadership.
  • Supports the Avera strategic plan by implementing strategies and achieving goals at both the system and regional level.
  • Ensures compliance with Avera mission, policies and procedures, contractual agreements to include, but not limited to, the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services. Serves as the resource for clinicians on issues and relationships affected by the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care.
  • Promotes and supports Avera physician leadership education and growth opportunities.
  • Serves as the administrative representative at the Avera Region’s Board of Directors, Medical Executive Committee and other Region and System committees as assigned.
  • On behalf of Avera serves as a clinical spokesperson and advocate when required.

Required Education, License/Certification, or Work Experience:

  • Medical Doctor/Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (MD/DO)
