Materials Engineer – Coatings & Surface Treatments Materials Testing
TerraPower, LLC is seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer to support the engineering efforts of the Materials Development & Qualification team. This role will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers focused on development and qualification for next generation material and components for sodium cooled fast reactors. You will be responsible for emissivity and materials testing supporting the performance requirements of the Natrium Reactor. Your role will also include R&D of advanced materials and fabrication technologies.
Responsibilities
- Interface with various project teams to ensure materials development and testing efforts meet programmatic objectives
- Develop test requirements, plans, specifications, and procedures for testing unique materials in complex environments, including liquid metal sodium
- Provide material selection guidance for TerraPower’s reactor development programs
- Oversee test programs for material performance and degradation focused on coatings and surface treatments (e.g., physical property measurements, ion and neutron irradiation, mechanical testing, and emissivity)
- Lead large-scale cooperative projects for materials testing and development with external collaborators, partners, and suppliers
- Maintain project schedule and ensure timely delivery of results
- Conduct testing and material characterization in a laboratory environment
- Provide materials engineering support for the procurement of engineered components and systems
- Lead the testing and qualification efforts to increase the technology readiness level of key components
- External procurements of materials, equipment, and testing services, including authoring procurement requisitions and managing supplier performance to plan
- Perform scientific analysis on test data and generate technical reports to document new knowledge related to materials performance and behavior, reactor design, and materials qualification
Key Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree with minimum 4 years of related experience; or a Master’s degree. A degree in Materials Science/Engineering, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline is required.
- Prior experience in materials development, testing, and characterization for nuclear research or related industrial applications is highly desired
- Experience working to advance materials technology through standard technology readiness levels is required
