Description

The goal of the Community Violence Intervention (CVI) initiative is to significantly reduce fatal and non-fatal shootings in the city. This will be accomplished by effectively engaging the individuals in the community with high propensity to be involved in gun violence. Using a public health approach, the violence intervention team will conduct proactive outreach to these individuals and provide intervention, mediation, and case management services. The Violence Interventionist conducts outreach in the streets and/or local hospital in order to provide intervention, mediation, and case management for individuals at highest risk for engaging in lethal violence.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Identify and establish strong and trusting relationships with individuals in the community at highest risk for gun violence
  • Manage a caseload of 7-10 individuals at highest risk for gun violence and, as needed, connect them to various wraparound support services that are available to them in the community (job programs, GED, mental health, etc.)
  • Work to intervene in circumstances in which violence is likely, including possible retaliation
  • Engage in crisis response after shootings
  • Consistently record information regarding interventions you are doing (document client case notes, track daily engagements and conflicts mediated, etc.)
  • Maintain a visible presence in key neighborhoods so that community members know and trust you and understand that there are resources available to help prevent violent conflict
  • Keep supervisor informed of evolving dynamics on the street and in the community
  • Participate in ongoing trainings and collaborate with rest of team, as needed, in order to effectively mediate conflicts, manage caseload, etc.

Qualifications

Skills & Qualifications:

  • Can communicate effectively and build trust with individuals at high risk for violence
  • High credibility and comfort operating in the initiative’s target neighborhoods
  • Ability to intervene and mediate in high tension situations
  • Ability to input and manage basic data related daily activities
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other community-based service providers
  • Experience working with individuals in crisis and victims of violence
  • Openness to professional learning and development
  • Valid driver’s license, insurance, and good driving record
  • No pending criminal cases; no prior convictions for domestic violence (within 10 years); no prior convictions for sexual assault or child abuse.
