Successful candidates for this position will be a Principal Systems Engineer within the Tactical Space Division at Northrop Grumman Space Systems located in Dulles, VA or Gilbert, AZ.

The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for supporting key Systems Engineering (SE) deliverables as part of an Worksite Owner (WSO) Team for the Module-level Worksite assessments.  This role is intended to blend SE coordination between multiple HALO Worksite Stakeholders, including: Human Systems Integration (HSI), Mechanical Engineering, and various subsystems and component providers.  The Principal Systems Engineer is expected to support the senior WSO and help train junior WSO team members. An ideal candidate would have experience in Human Factors (HF) engineering, specifically with applying HF aspects to spacecraft design on an inter-disciplinary team. A strong background in both Mechanical Engineering and Systems Engineering is preferred. The Principal Systems Engineer would report directly to HALO Engineering Management.

The Principal Systems Engineer position is expected to complete tasks under only general direction, independently determine and develop approach to solutions. Completed tasks are reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives. Principal Systems Engineer is expected to interact frequently with inter-organizational and outside customer contacts and is expected to represent the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects. 

Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Provide support directly to Engineering Management to achieve WSO objectives

  • Provide regular briefings directly to HALO Program leadership

  • Provide dedicated systems engineering support to WSO Stakeholders (such as HSI, Mechanical, Harness, Thermal)

  • Brainstorm and develop solutions to Worksite issues and non-conformances with other WSO stakeholders

  • Ownership of other Worksite responsibilities as defined by Engineering Management

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Principal Systems Engineer: Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or related technical field and 5+ years of experience, Master’s Degree and 3+ years of experience; or a PhD and 1+ years of experience

  • Proficiency in related engineering programs, Microsoft Office or equivalent document generation programs, Microsoft SharePoint or equivalent collaboration tool, MALTAB or equivalent computational tool

  • Experience in SE and Mechanical Engineering

  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD security clearance

Preferred Qualifications: 

Either self-experience or experience interfacing with team members in any of the following fields: 

  • Very strong communication skills

  • Strong SE understanding (requirements, verification, validation, testing, analysis)

  • Strong Mechanical design and development understanding

  • Familiarity with Human Factors Engineering - preferably in Human Spaceflight applications

  • Familiarity with Spacecraft Harness design

  • Familiarity with Spacecraft Thermal design

  • Strong Computer Aided Design (CAD) skills - including integrating models

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Project and Integrated Master Schedules (IMS)

  • Experience with Waiver/Deviation development, submission, and adjudication
