About the role

The Red Hat Cost Management team is building a new sub-team to create a deployable, on-premise product version of our service. We are looking for a skilled Senior Software Engineer to implement the core productization and data persistence features.

You will focus on adapting the existing Python/Django codebase to run efficiently within a customer's cluster and ensure the new PostgreSQL-centric data model is robust and performant. This role requires strong development skills paired with a solid understanding of database optimization and cloud-native deployment using Kubernetes/OpenShift tooling.

You will be responsible for tackling complex technical challenges and delivering reliable, high-quality code necessary to launch this new product offering.

What you will do

  • Implement and optimize the data access layer within the Python/Django application, ensuring maximum performance with the on-prem PostgreSQL database.
  • Develop, test, and maintain the deployment artifacts for the product, primarily focusing on Helm charts and/or Operator components for provisioning and managing the application stack within OpenShift/Kubernetes.
  • Write high-quality, maintainable code to refactor and adapt the existing SaaS application logic, removing dependencies on cloud-specific services and integrating seamlessly with the self-managed architecture.
  • Help design and implement robust unit, integration, and end-to-end tests for the on-prem deployment process and core features.
  • Utilize and contribute to the Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment (CI/CD) pipelines for building and validating container images and release bundles.
  • Work closely with the Product managers, Product Owners, and other engineers to translate architectural designs into reliable code deliverables.
  • Assist in troubleshooting and resolving complex issues related to the on-prem product's deployment, performance, and PostgreSQL interactions.

What you will bring

  • 5+ years of experience developing production applications with Python/Django and managing asynchronous tasks with Celery.
  • 3+ years of experience with PostgreSQL, including schema design, migration management, and SQL query optimization for performance.
  • 2+ years of experience working with containers (Docker/Podman) and Kubernetes/OpenShift, including a practical understanding of Helm charts or Operators.
  • Proven experience implementing microservices and integration design patterns to build scalable, decoupled systems.
  • 3+ years of experience with CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitLab, GitHub Actions) and Git-based workflows within an Agile team environment.

Preferred Plus

  • Experience adapting SaaS applications for on-premise, air-gapped, or highly constrained environments.
  • Experience writing custom Helm charts or contributing to Kubernetes Operators using Go or Java.
  • Deep knowledge of relational database internals and a track record of solving complex performance tuning challenges.
  • Experience leveraging AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Cursor, Sourcery) to accelerate delivery and code quality.
