Hours: 6:00am - 2:30pm
Every Other Weekend and Holiday, Required
Sorts, cleans and processes laundry for the Hospital and other facilities.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Job Specifics
1. Prioritizes workload at beginning of shift, so that important deadlines can be met.
2. Applies personal protection practices and Infection Control techniques; keeps work area and equipment clean.
3. Wears protective clothing (i.e., gown, cap, gloves, goggles, as indicated); washes hands before and after handling soiled linen.
4. Follows established Infection Control Guidelines.
5. Reports linen shortages to supervisor.
6. Answers phone; receives requests for linen and pick-up of soiled linen; relays information..
7. Operates dryers; loads and unloads linen to keep production flowing.
8. Counts remaining linen on clean linen carts from each area; adds appropriate amount and type of linen.
9. Cleans and disinfects linen carts daily.
10. Dry mops and dusts Laundry as per procedure.
11. Receives and inspects linen for tears, holes, etc, inspects green towels for holes, sends to seamstress for repair as needed.
12. Folds surgical drapes and wraps packs at a rate of 6 per minute.
13. Assists in maintaining linen room and its equipment.
14. Assists with linen inventory, annually.
15. Demonstrates knowledge of various departmental jobs; maintains ability to assist in other positions.
16. Attends departmental in-services and educational programs to develop communication skills, learn new forms/procedures, etc.
17. Sorts soiled linen for washers, according to established procedures. Can sort one basket - 7 to 10 minutes.
18. Operates flat work ironer; feeds sheets and other flat items. Able to produce 350 folded sheets per hour.
19. Operates towel and gown folder; able to produce 130 folded gowns in 30 minutes; 160 towels in 30 minutes.
20. Delivers linens to floors promptly in the morning. All carts to be delivered by 7:30 am.
21. Completes pick-up schedule as posted within established time frames.
22. Folds large blanket items and fitted sheets. A basket of bath blankets in 10 minute - spreads in 5 minutes - fitted sheets in 20 minutes.
23. Loads packs and linen supplies on cart.

Physical and Mental Requirements: Classified as heavy work by the Dictionary of Ocupational Titles: May exert 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 20 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly in order to move objects.
• Stands and walks constantly on carpet or tiled surfaces.
• Lifts up to 70 pounds from floor to waist and/or shoulder level frequently.
• Carries up to 20 pounds for distances of up to 300 feets occasionally.
• Frequently pushes/pulls up to 300 pounds throughout the hospital.
• Constant bending and twisting.
• Occasionally squats and kneels.
• Reaches up to two feet overhead on a constant basis.
• Ability to occasionally operate hand controls on various laundry equipment.
• Near-visual acuity for detecting soiled or torn linen; color perception required.
• Auditory acuity adequate for hearing normal voice tones when not facing an individual and to detect noises in malfunctioning equipment.
• Manual dexterity, digital sensitivity, and flexibility in order to operate equipment and manipulate laundry.
Mental Demands--Possesses good general mental health; verbal and written communication skills; ability to speak English and understand spoken English, and basic math skills.
Working Environment: Work is performed in an indoor environment. Frequent exposure to extreme heat, hot pipes, linen, high noise level, slippery and wet floors, and possible exposure to infections bodily fluids, which is mitegated by the use of gowns, gloves, etc.to reduce the risk of exposure.
