About the role

Position Type:

Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professor of Classics

Position Type:

Regular

Salary Range:

$86,284-$95,901

Purpose:

The Department of Classics and Ancient Studies at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic university, seeks applicants for the Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professorship of Classics, a full-time endowed tenure-track position, with a start date of September 1, 2027. The incumbent will hold the title of Paul L. Locatelli, S.J. Assistant Professor for the duration of their probationary period, and will also have access to supplementary research funds. SCU is a welcoming and inclusive community of teaching scholars whose work is grounded in the University’s fundamental values. Those values, which include academic excellence, social justice and community engagement, are infused with a culture of care that defines our community—upholding the dignity of all. The University draws on the many resources of the greater Bay Area, including Silicon Valley, where we are located.

The department seeks a broadly trained teacher-scholar working in Latin literature and Roman culture within its wider global context. Applicants with research and teaching interests in interdisciplinary areas including, for example, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, ecocriticism, cognitive studies, economics and entrepreneurship, or reception will receive particular consideration, as will candidates who demonstrate the ability or commitment to recruit and retain language students.

The successful candidate will start on September 1, 2027 and be expected to teach, engage in scholarship, and do service for the department, college, University, and profession. SCU is on the quarter system and tenure-stream faculty are expected to teach six courses per year (two each quarter), assuming they are actively engaged in scholarship.

The salary range for this position is $86,284-$95,901, depending on the successful candidate's years of teaching experience at the college level. The position comes with generous benefits (scu.edu/hr/benefits), including medical, dental, vision, and life insurance, and University contributions toward retirement. Recognizing the high cost of housing in the local area, there are two University housing assistance programs: rental assistance to ease the transition into the local housing market, and housing purchase assistance for tenure-stream faculty.

Required Qualifications

1) Candidates must have a Ph.D in Classics or a closely related discipline by the appointment start date.

2) Demonstrated potential for effective and inclusive teaching and mentoring.

3) Ability to teach Ancient Greek and Latin at all undergraduate levels

4) Ability to teach a range of core courses

5) Potential for effective service to the Department, College or University.
