Position Overview
This position is responsible for planning and directing the geotechnical activities of the district as they relate to the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and structures on both state and local systems.
Essential Functions
- Plan, organize, and supervise the activities of the district Geotechnical Unit.
- Provide timely, practical, and economical solutions to geotechnical problems encountered during the design, construction, and maintenance of roadways and structures.
- Prepare, review, and approve Geotechnical Reports for structure and roadway improvements.
- Review plans, and develop specifications, special provisions, and details regarding geotechnical construction.
- Develop the scope of work and supervise professional contracts awarded to consulting firms forgeotechnical work.
- Provide geotechnical expertise to local highway agencies and other government agencies.
- Ensure that geotechnical construction is performed according to applicable plans, special provisions, and standard specifications.
- Assign, train, motivate, and evaluate staff. Ensure staff compliance with applicable safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
- Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Current registration as a Licensed Professional Engineer in the state of Illinois.
- Five years of experience in civil engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of geotechnical products, subsurface investigation methods, and soil testing procedures.
- Previous coursework in geotechnical engineering.
- Previous work experience in geotechnical engineering.
- Strong oral and/or written communication skills.
- Strong judgement and analytical aptitude.
- Strong management skills.
