About the Team

The Cybersecurity Team leads enterprise cybersecurity strategy, governance, and operational alignment across the organization. The team partners with business units, technology, legal, and risk stakeholders to manage cyber risk, implement security controls, drive AI governance, and strengthen the company’s overall security posture. Our work spans strategic planning, policy development, vendor risk management, security operations coordination, and executive reporting.

We operate at the intersection of business enablement and risk management — ensuring security supports innovation while protecting the enterprise.

Role Overview

The Cybersecurity Strategy Intern partners directly with the Deputy CISO to advance enterprise cybersecurity priorities and execution. This role sits within the Cybersecurity Operations team and supports strategic coordination, program tracking, operational initiatives, and executive communications.

This is a high-visibility opportunity offering exposure to executive decision-making, enterprise risk management, AI governance, and modern cybersecurity leadership in a complex, multi-business environment.

Responsibilities

  • Strategy & Leadership Support

    • Partner with the Deputy CISO to advance cybersecurity strategic initiatives
    • Translate executive direction into structured plans, timelines, and action items
    • Develop concise executive-ready presentations, briefings, and decision memos
  • Program & Portfolio Coordination

    • Track progress across multiple security initiatives (e.g., AI governance, vulnerability management, SecOps improvements)
    • Maintain dashboards and milestone trackers
    • Identify risks, dependencies, and blockers across cross-functional teams
    • Support OKR tracking and roadmap execution
  • Analysis & Research

    • Conduct structured research to support strategic decision-making
    • Synthesize technical and business inputs into clear, actionable insights
    • Support vendor assessments and risk reviews as needed
  • Executive Communication

    • Prepare leadership updates and summaries for senior stakeholders
    • Capture and organize key decisions and follow-ups from cross-functional meetings
    • Contribute to clear, consistent messaging across security initiative

Qualifications

  • Required
    • Currently pursuing a degree in Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Business, Public Policy, or a related field
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills
    • Excellent organizational and analytical skills
    • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
    • High attention to detail and structured thinking
  • Preferred
    • Interest in cybersecurity, governance, AI risk, or enterprise technology
    • Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., Jira, Smartsheet, Asana, etc.)
    • Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts (risk, vulnerability, incident response, IAM, etc.)
    • Experience creating presentations for leadership audiences
  • What Success Looks Like
    • Security initiatives are clearly tracked and progressing
    • Executive materials are concise, accurate, and decision-focused
    • Cross-team coordination improves and fewer initiatives stall
    • Strategic priorities are supported with structured analysis and documentation

The internship will run from June 1, 2026-August 14, 2026, up to 35 hours per week. 

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in New York City.  The reasonable estimate, if hired in New York City, is $20 per hour.
