The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility is one of the 10 service centers within the Center for Biomedical Research Support that operates under the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors to support the research community on campus and externally. The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility provides services, self-service equipment, and collaborative research for the detection, characterization, and quantification of proteins and other biomolecules.
The Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility is seeking a Lab Manager and Research Engineering/Scientist Associate II to provide proteomics and metabolomics services using HPLC and mass spectrometry in the Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility, provide lab management and assist with outreach activities.

Purpose
To serve as lab manager and provide proteomics and metabolomics services using HPLC and mass spectrometry in the Biological Mass Spectrometry Facility. To educate and train users, and manage laboratory purchasing, inventory, billing, and safety.
Responsibilities
- Provide services in liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry, including molecular weight determination, protein identification and metabolomics via LC-MS/MS. Learn and perform standard lab protocols for operating instruments, preparing samples, and analyzing results. Deliver results to users electronically within the expected turnaround time. Operate and do routine maintenance on the lab HPLCs and mass spectrometers.
- Manage lab supplies, purchase needed items and keep track of inventory and stocking. Contribute to lab functioning by preparing income/expense analyses, laboratory safety reports, and organizing lab space. Manage data backups.
- Assist in development of new protocols. Participate in educational and outreach activities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in chemistry, biology, or in a field related to the work to be performed, or bachelor’s degree with 2 years related experience.
- Software skills for analyzing data.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for working in a team environment and collaborating with on- and off-site research labs.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Ability to work independently and perform service work with expected turnaround and quality control.
Preferred Qualifications
- Lab management experience.
- Bioinformatics experience.
- Experience in HPLC and mass spectrometry instrumentation operation.
- Experience with protein sample preparation protocols relevant to proteomics.
- Experience with MALDI.
- Experience with Orbitrap instrumentation and nanoflow UPLC.
- Experience with proteomics data processing for identification and quantitation.
- Experience in metabolomics.
- Core facility experience.
- Experience with data processing software.
Salary
$50,000 + depending on qualifications
