Description
The Library Page position is located in NYPL Conservation's Collections Care unit, which supports NYPL's three research centers dedicated to the preservation and access of tens of millions of research collections.The Library Page position provides the opportunity to work in a large and busy conservation division consisting of two units, Collections Care and Special Collections Conservation. NYPL Conservation consists of a team of conservators and technicians specializing in bound, flat, and photographic materials. The division provides conservation assessment, treatment, custom enclosures, research, and training to advance the preservation of the collection and meet the conservation needs of the Library’s active access, exhibition, loan, digitization, and acquisition programs.
The Library Page carries out basic stabilization, treatment, and rehousing of collections and is trained in these capacities by Conservation staff.
The Library Collections Care Page position is scheduled for maximum 19 hours per week, Monday - Friday. Schedules are variable based on library needs and may be subject to change.
Key Responsibilities
Under the training and direction of the Collections Care Supervisor, the Library Collections Care Page works a maximum of 19 hours per week and will:
- Produce custom protective enclosures for collections, both by machine (using CAD software) and by hand
- Receive collections sent to the unit from the research centers / Prepare collections for movement to the research centers
- Keep work statistics and provide administrative support
- Help maintain the Collections Care lab
- Performs other related duties as assigned, including carrying out basic stabilization on collections following training by the division staff
Required Education, Experience & Skills
Required Education & Experience- Current enrollment in a degree program at an accredited school
- Proper employment certificate for minors under 18 as required by NYS law
- Fluency with CAD software or software for packaging design
- Computer fluency, especially with Google Suite and Microsoft Office
- Demonstrated hand skills and attention to detail, balanced with efficiency
- Ability to work with a team and on independent projects
- Good communication and interpersonal skills
