Position Overview:

The Vice President, Public Policy & Strategy, will serve as an integral member of the Government & External Affairs team within MUFG’s Americas Legal Department, based in New York. This multifaceted role blends traditional government affairs responsibilities with enterprise-level sustainability strategy support to advance MUFG’s policy, brand, and commercial objectives across the region.  In the government affairs function, the Vice President will help drive MUFG’s advocacy and engagement efforts on a range of public policy matters, including federal legislative and regulatory developments impacting MUFG’s regulation, operations and  strategic interests in the U.S. including artificial intelligence, energy and infrastructure, digital innovation—and other areas relevant to MUFG’s core business lines, including Global Corporate & Investment Banking (GCIB) and Japanese Corporate Banking (JCB). The candidate will also play a key part in MUFG Americas’ strategic activities related to MUFG Americas’ enterprise-wide sustainability strategy, governance, and planning in addition to supporting executive-sponsored Corporate Responsibility and Social Impact Council (CRSI) and Climate and Sustainability Sub-Council (CSSC) working in close coordination with cross-functional colleagues from Legal, Compliance, Risk, Operations, Corporate Communications, and in close coordination with MUFG’s Sustainability Strategy and Regulatory Affairs Offices in Tokyo working to support alignment with MUFG’s net-zero initiatives, including the Carbon Neutrality Declaration (CND) in addition to partnering with GCIB and JCB colleagues on market-based transition finance solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

Sustainability Strategy & Planning

  • Support MUFG Americas’ strategy and positioning on sustainability, including climate transition and net-zero planning, in alignment with MUFG Group’s global strategy.
  • Track and monitor policy trends, peer best practices, and market developments to support strategic planning and progress towards enterprise-wide sustainability objectives.
  • Support enterprise-wide governance efforts, including the CSRI/CSSC and ongoing work amongst cross-functional teams, including Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Operations, to ensure cohesive execution of sustainability initiatives.
  • Collaborate with Tokyo-based Sustainability Office to in support of global net-zero aspirations and MUFG Group’s Carbon Neutrality Declaration.
  • Help develop messaging and positioning for external stakeholders, including government entities, industry peers, and advocacy partners on sustainability topics.

Public Policy & Government Affairs

  • Monitor and analyze legislative, regulatory, and executive branch developments affecting financial institutions, with a focus on issues relevant to internationally headquartered banks operating in the U.S.
  • Track and provide insight on public policy issues impacting MUFG’s operations and lines of business, including financial regulatory reform and supervisory frameworks; artificial intelligence and innovation; energy policy, data center and AI infrastructure investment, U.S.-Japan relations; digital technology, payments, and financial innovation
  • Produce briefing materials, internal memos, and analysis for senior executives and relevant SMES — legal, risk, and business leaders on key policy issues and issues impacting MUFG Americas regulation, strategic interests and its customers and clients.
