Job Duties

VDOT's Lynchburg District Cluster Springs Area Headquarters is seeking a highly skilled Highway Maintenance Operator to join their team! As the successful candidate, you will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance operations as an essential employee.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment. See additional information in the Special Instructions to Applicants section below.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.

Additional Considerations

• Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
• Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
• A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
• Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
• Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.

In addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates who have a current CDL. Current VDOT employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.
