About the role

Ameriprise Financial is hiring a Senior Director of Accounting to lead and manage a department responsible for accounting development, controls, and production support for systematic feeds to the general ledger from business owned systems. This person will partner with business and finance to develop and maintain accounting practices consistent with GAAP and other governing agencies (FINRA, SEC, Insurance Examiners) ensuring financial integrity in feeds and processes. You will also perform analysis requiring use of multiple business sources and reports unique for each business and product line.

Key Responsibilities
Provide oversight and lead teams to ensure integrity in financial records sent to general ledger from business systems sending accounting feeds to the general ledger.  Approve journal entries, controls and balance sheet reconciliations and work arounds for non-automated processes.

Lead diverse accounting functions across many products and platforms.  Manage multiple relationships across the organization and provide functional advice, accounting expertise, and training to business partners and accountants.  Participates as a subject matter expert on business projects and help design accounting processes for business changes.  Reviews, analyzes, and resolves complex issues in accounting transactions and provide oversight to department. 

Lead business system accounting development across multiple product lines and platforms ensuring well controlled processes are built in accordance with accounting policies.  Escalate issues with senior leaders in finance and business groups.   Assess g/l linkages for new development and impact on accounting processes.  Usually specializes in accounting for lines of business such as insurance, certificates, compensation, financial planning, etc.

Lead process improvement to ensure that integrity, control and optimal efficiency are established while minimizing financial risks.  Develops and implements process improvement initiatives that support the department goals and service levels.


Provides people and organizational leadership.  Provides feedback and coaching to employees as well as business partners outside of finance.    


Required Qualifications

  • Accounting Degree and 10+ years of experience, comprehensive knowledge of GAAP.

  • 7+ years people leadership experience.

  • Support diverse accounting functions across multiple platforms, products, and organizations throughout the company. 

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills; proficient with excel, word, and powerpoint.

  • Ability to communicate accounting concepts to the business and technology and establish strong relationships across business functions.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated leadership in a finance operation environment. 

  • Comprehensive knowledge of GAAP & SEC requirements.

  • Internal or external audit experience.
