Works with considerable independence to perform and interpret various immunohematological tests in order to provide compatible blood for transfusion of patients. Is fully proficient in the use of all equipment and procedures for an assigned area. Work schedule includes rotating shifts, holidays and/or on-call.I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Follows established Blood Bank protocols perform tests including the most complex for an assigned area and prepares component blood products for transfusion. Provides guidance and consultation to lower level technologists, technicians and others in the interpretation of complex or unusual test results and in the performance of standard operating Blood Bank procedures.
2. Interprets and correlates clinical test results with patient history, diagnosis, and clinical condition in order to explain test results (normal/abnormal) so that appropriate action can be taken and/or blood component can be transfused.
3. Performs low, moderate and/or high complexity testing as required.
4. Performs all testing and work assignments with a positive sense of urgency meeting all established turnaround times and deadlines.
5. Troubleshoots testing process discrepancies.
6. Logs and receives donor and patient specimens. Sort and triage requisitions and specimens to appropriate work area in a timely manner. Processes specimens for patients including but not limited to centrifugation, aliquotting and labeling.
7. Processes blood donor specimens for outside shipment and testing. Sends specimens and blood products between campuses and various sites using appropriate packaging and transport methods.
8. Answers telephones and communicates pertinent information. Sends specimens, blood products and carriers to various sites using the pneumatic tube.
9. Assists in the validation and implementation of new equipment, equipment modifications and/or test systems.
10. Ensures that test results meet requirements of the laboratory quality control program.
11. Performs assigned duties to ensure an adequate inventory of supplies for the assigned area. Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. Utilizes first-in/first-out (FIFO) inventory management practices.
12. Maintains equipment during the shift including necessary calibration and cleaning to assure accurate results and performance. Performs moderately complex troubleshooting, repair, and modification of a wide range of complex equipment and instrumentation. Notifies supervisory personnel of any equipment failures.
13. Instructs technicians and technologists in the set-up and operation of new equipment and procedures.
14. Ensures compliance with all laboratory quality and safety policies.
15. Instructs students and new employees in clinical laboratory operations and procedures.
16. Maintains concurrent, complete and accurate records of processes performed using manual and computer-based systems. Follow records management procedures. Archive records as directed.
