The College of Veterinary Medicine invites applicants to apply for the position of Laboratory Animal Technician, located within the Laboratory Animal Facilities. The primary purpose of the position is to ensure the health and well-being of the laboratory animals. Under general supervision, this position provides general care, enrichment, feeding, bathing and exercising for laboratory animals. Records general daily observations. Cleans and disinfects animal cages, rooms or treatment areas. Provides general housekeeping. Sterilizes equipment. Receives and puts away supplies. Reports any issues found while working with the animals. Attends relevant training.
Provides general animal care by feeding animals, providing enrichment, cleaning kennels, cages, bowls, toys and rooms, filling cages and pans with bedding and litter, completing animal room logs, washing carts, etc. Records general daily observations. Consistently checks that all areas are stocked with necessary supplies. Evaluates general animal health. Works in the cage wash area to wash supplies.
Performs general housekeeping duties to include mopping, cleaning, dusting, taking out trash, etc.
Notifies Manager and Maintenance Staff regarding issues found within the facilities on a daily basis. Notifies Manager, OLAC veterinarians, and the appropriate Principal Investigator of any clinical issues found while working with the animals. Keeps Manager up-to-date on any information regarding the PI and their respective technicians; likewise, being update by the Manager on protocols, PI, etc. Attends OLAC training.
Follows Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to correctly sanitize and put away all enrichment, rodent cages, litter pans, etc. Follows SOPs to store all food, bedding, and other supplies and to properly house newly arrived animals. Assists in the transport of supplies between buildings when necessary.
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed:
- General knowledge of animal behavior
- General knowledge of housekeeping to include cleaning and sterilization
- Knowledge of safety procedures
- Ability to transport animals and/or equipment between facilities
- Ability to work independently
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to handle animals
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions
Minimum Qualifications:
Depending on experience and qualifications of successful candidate, individual will be hired in as a Laboratory Technician 1, Laboratory Technician 2, Senior Laboratory Technician 1, or Senior Laboratory Technician 2:
Laboratory Technician 1
- Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum Experience:
- None
- Additional Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Must be able to work around chemicals.
Laboratory Technician 2
- Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum Experience:
- 6 months of relevant experience.
- Additional Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Must be able to work around chemicals.
Senior Laboratory Technician 1
- Minimum Education:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum Experience:
- 2 years of relevant experience.
- Additional Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds without assistance.
- Must be able to work around chemicals.
- Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification.
Senior Laboratory Technician 2
