Overview

The Vermont Attorney General’s Office has an immediate opening for a full-time assistant attorney general in the Consumer Protection Unit (“CPU”).

Description

The CPU handles cases in all areas of Vermont’s consumer and antitrust laws, which prohibit businesses from engaging in unfair or deceptive acts or practices. The CPU does this by: investigating serious or widespread allegations of consumer deception; where appropriate, filing suit against those who have violated consumer protection and related laws; resolving consumer abuses in a way that restores consumer losses and deters future violations of law; issuing consumer protection rules or guidance; appearing before the Vermont Legislature on consumer protection issues; commenting on federal laws and regulations of interest to Vermont consumers; and conducting consumer education and working to encourage fair business practices. The CPU also works with the Attorney General’s Consumer Assistance Program (“CAP”) to assist consumers and small businesses to understand consumer laws and rights, and to investigate and resolve disputes, through outreach, education, mediation, and other methods. The position will involve some coordination with CAP. This position also may involve work in other divisions of the Attorney General’s Office.

Compensation

This Assistant Attorney General position is an exempt full-time position. Salary and benefits will be based upon qualifications and experience in accordance with the State of Vermont Attorney Pay Plan. Minimum Requirements

The successful candidate must be a member in good standing of the Vermont bar or be eligible to be admitted.

Qualifications include one to five years of relevant litigation and/or consumer law experience; excellent legal writing and analysis skills; strong oral advocacy and communication skills; effective time management skills; and the ability to work well both independently and in collaboration with co-counsel and state agencies.
