Research Associate II/Sr. Research Associate I, Protein Crystallography
Scorpion TherapeuticsAbout the role
Scorpion is a pioneering clinical-stage oncology company redefining the frontier of precision medicine to deliver optimized and transformational therapies for larger populations of patients with cancer. Scorpion has built a proprietary and fully integrated platform of the most advanced technologies across cancer biology, medicinal chemistry, and data sciences, with the goal of consistently and rapidly creating exquisitely selective small molecule compounds against an unprecedented spectrum of targets. Scorpion aims to leverage its platform to advance a broad pipeline of wholly owned, optimized compounds across three target categories: best-in-class molecules targeting validated oncogene targets; first-in-class molecules for previously undruggable targets; and first-in-class molecules for novel cancer targets.
We are seeking a highly motivated Research Associate II / Senior Research Associate I with experience in all aspects of protein crystallography to join our dynamic drug discovery team. Scorpion’s ambitious programs require innovative solutions for difficult problems. You will serve a critical role in supporting protein crystallization efforts for multiple projects within our portfolio, where your primary role will be to use our Structural Biology platform to identify crystallization conditions, optimize crystals, and harvest for data collection. This is a unique opportunity to work closely with a skilled group of scientists representing medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, computational chemistry, biology, and other disciplines to advance programs to the clinic.
Key Responsibilities:
- Utilize Scorpion Therapeutics’ crystallography platform to perform sparse screens to identify initial crystallization conditions
- Design and execute crystal optimization screens and harvest crystals
- Troubleshoot problems that occur in the gene-to-structure pathway
- Coordinate crystal shipments for data collection
- Express, purify, and perform quality control for recombinant protein
- Analyze and present findings to colleagues
- Collaborate with Scorpion colleagues in biochemistry, chemical biology, chemical data science, and medicinal chemistry on both early-stage and advanced programs
- Maintain excellent records and communication across internal and external colleagues
Qualifications:
- BSc or MSc in Structural Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or a related field with at least 1-3 years of relevant experience in a structural biology setting
- Hands-on experience operating a protein crystallization robot and crystallization plate imager
- Ability to independently optimize crystallization conditions and harvest crystals
- Desire to learn crystallization dataset processing, structure solution, and data refinement
- Experience in protein purification including bacterial expression and FPLC/AKTA operation
- Ability to work efficiently, maintain accurate records, and present data in team settings
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced cross-functional environment
