Have you ever heard the expression “Train Like You Fight, and Fight Like You Train”? When a fighter pilot engages a real threat, the quality of their training can determine whether the mission succeeds or fails.  Our pilots need effective, realistic training to prepare for the threats they face today – and those they may have to face tomorrow.

That is what we work toward every day in the Air Combat Test & Training (ACTT) department. We are dedicated to revolutionizing airborne pilot training for U.S. Navy and Air Force next-generation fighter jets. Our flagship product, the Tactical Combat Training System Increment II (TCTS II), is an on-aircraft, in-flight training system that provides unmatched operational realism to our nation’s top-tier fighter pilots.  We are a system of systems development team that designs, integrates, and supports some of the largest, most complex solutions offered by Collins Aerospace.

The demands of a military Large Scale Exercise (LSE) requires hundreds of physical assets spread across multiple land base and offshore blue water ranges covering hundreds of thousands of acres. Recreating a LSE prior to participating in the event is physically impossible. As a student participating in the Summer Engineering Project Program (SEPP) in the ACTT department you will be hands on evolving the Distributed Simulation Server (DistSim) application and adjacent software to construct more realistic LSEs with higher fidelity data, improved displays, and large visual maps. In order for pilots to Train Like You Fight we need your help to improve a simulator that Tests like they Train!

What You Will Do:

  • Understand stakeholders needs & produce set of requirements
  • Create new software that simulates realistic traffic for pilot training missions
  • Setup Orchestration environments that coordinate hundreds of software apps to run large scale tests
  • Integrate map displays and build user interfaces

What You Will Learn:

  • How Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) radio networks work and how to simulate them
  • How to build software and systems that scale to large numbers
  • UI/UX design and implementation
  • Data analysis, generation, and verification

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or equivalent and student must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or advanced degree in an applicable discipline.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract

Qualifications We Prefer:

  • Works independently with general supervision directed by other leads
  • Coordinates across multiple discipline teams
  • Shows competency in the systems engineering process and C++ development
  • Ability to work through unexpected and unpredictable behavior of the system
  • Demonstrates critical thinking and decision making in a timely manner
