Job Description:

Summary/Objective:
The Office of Advancement & Alumni Relations are seeking two student assistants to provide professional assistance to the School of Public Affair’s advancement team. Students interested in gaining experience in the field of development, including working with alumni, event, and trip planning, and assisting with fundraising projects are encouraged to apply. The student worker will be responsible for confidential information, so discretion and professionalism are extremely important.

Essential Functions:
Typical assignments include:

  • Curating alumni and donor information through analyzing data in Excel spreadsheets, conducting online research, and updating information in our database.
  • Reviewing donor reports and drafting acknowledgement communications including mail, email, and telephone.
  • Assisting the team with event planning (SPA programs and All American Weekend), business trip planning, and site visit.
  • Assisting the Assistant Dean of Development, Director of Development and Advancement Coordinator with administrative tasks as needed.

Position Type:

  • Student
  • Part-time
  • 20 hrs./week 

Salary Range:

  • $17.50/hour (Undergraduate students)
  • $19/hour (Graduate Students)

Required Education and Experience

  • A high school diploma or its equivalent is required.
  • Must currently be an enrolled student at American University. Non-enrolled students or individuals will not be considered for the position. 
  • This position allows students to develop communication and professional skills in an office setting that will serve them throughout their academic and postgraduate careers.
  • The successful applicant will display professional communication skills through phone, email, and in person along with writing experience.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and pay close attention to detail.
  • This position requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and a willingness to learn and to be a team player is essential for the success of this position.

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Experience with Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and database management software/CRM is a plus.
  • Federal Work-Study award students are encouraged to apply.
