A Day in the Life of a Senior Transportation Project Engineer at Hanson
Here’s a snapshot of what you would do in this role:
- Take a leading role on major Illinois transportation projects, including the Tollway I‑355/I‑88 Interchange master planning project and the IDOT I‑80 Mississippi River Bridge replacement and interchange reconstruction
- Serve as a project engineer coordinating with multiple disciplines and subconsultants, contributing to schedules, and reviewing design team work
- Grow into deputy project manager responsibilities as experience increases
- Mentor and support junior engineers to build technical skills and professional confidence
- Develop roadway design solutions for:Major interstate and tollway improvementsUrban thoroughfare reconstructionsRural highway rehabilitation and reconstruction
- Direct the development of construction plans and contract documents
- Work with the latest OpenRoads Designer (ORD) software, supported by internal training and active user groups
- Author engineering reports, technical documents, and special provisions
- Visit project sites to assess existing conditions, identify challenges, and develop alternative solutions
- Review complex technical calculations, plans, reports, and deliverables
- Participate in client meetings, proposal development, and occasional public involvement activities
- Travel occasionally for client meetings and site visits
- Perform other related duties as assigned
What We’re Looking For
We feel the following qualifications would set you up for success in this role:
Skills
- Experience with Illinois DOT and/or Illinois Tollway planning, design, plan production, and PS&E
- Working knowledge of OpenRoads Designer; familiarity with ORD 3D modeling is a plus
- Strong interest in continued learning and expanding technical and leadership skills
- Experience leading or supporting quality control reviews
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering (required)
- Typically 10+ years of professional engineering experience, including 6+ years focused on roadway or transportation design
- Roadway design experience with IDOT and/or Illinois Tollway (required)
- Illinois P.E. or ability to reciprocate within six months

Salary Range: $150,000 – $180,000 Compensation is based on experience, technical qualifications, and overall fit. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus.
