About the Role

We are seeking a Lead Product Manager - Interoperability to drive the strategy, development, and commercialization of FHIR-based APIs, EHR integrations, and a Developer Portal to enable seamless healthcare data exchange. This role is ideal for a Technical Product Manager with a strong background in building API-based data products, launching developer marketplaces, and enabling third-party integrations with Epic, Cerner, Athena Health, and other EHR platforms.

The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in FHIR, HL7 v2.x, SMART on FHIR, and clinical interoperability standards while possessing hands-on experience in building and managing API ecosystems, developer portals, and self-service integration tools. This role will require close collaboration with engineering, compliance, partnerships, strategy and business development teams to create an interoperable healthcare ecosystem that drives innovation and scalability.

Key Responsibilities

Product Strategy & Roadmap

  • Define and drive the vision, strategy, and roadmap for interoperability solutions and API Marketplace, ensuring alignment with market needs, developer experience, and business goals.
  • Conduct market research and discovery to identify opportunities for API monetization, third-party integrations, and interoperability-driven solutions.
  • Develop a data-driven roadmap for FHIR APIs, SMART on FHIR applications, and developer-friendly tools to accelerate healthcare data exchange.
  • Stay informed on regulatory frameworks (CMS, ONC, TEFCA, HIPAA, 21st Century Cures Act, USCDI) and industry standards to guide product development.
  • Define and track API adoption metrics, developer engagement KPIs, and ecosystem growth indicators.

API & Interoperability Product Development

  • Lead the design, development, and launch of FHIR-based APIs and real-time data exchange solutions across Epic, Cerner, Athenahealth, and other EHR platforms.
  • Drive the creation of a self-service Developer Portal, enabling third-party developers, providers, and payers to easily discover, test, and integrate with APIs.
  • Define developer onboarding workflows, API documentation, and sandbox environments to enhance the developer experience.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to define API specifications, authentication protocols (OAuth 2.0, OpenID, JWT), and security best practices.
  • Implement FHIR R4, HL7 v2/v3, CDS Hooks, and bulk data exchange standards to enable secure and scalable interoperability.
  • Oversee API performance, rate limiting, usage monitoring, and versioning strategies to ensure a scalable and reliable integration ecosystem.
  • Work closely with UX designers and API engineers to create intuitive, well-documented, and developer-friendly API products.

Developer Portal & Marketplace Enablement

  • Build and manage a Developer Marketplace that allows third-party developers, digital health startups, and enterprise partners to integrate with our APIs.
  • Define API monetization strategies, including tiered pricing models, usage-based billing, and premium API access.
  • Develop tools for API analytics, developer engagement tracking, and integration troubleshooting.
  • Create developer support workflows, SDKs, and API reference guides to foster self-service adoption and reduce integration friction.
  • Engage with EHR vendors, digital health platforms, and healthcare startups to expand API partnerships and drive adoption.

Technical Leadership & Compliance

  • Ensure API compliance with HIPAA, GDPR, TEFCA, CMS mandates, and 21st Century Cures Act.
  • Partner with security and compliance teams to enforce data privacy best practices, access controls, and role-based permissions.
  • Provide thought leadership on FHIR adoption, API-first healthcare strategies, and interoperability best practices.
  • Define SLAs, performance benchmarks, and incident response protocols for API reliability.
  • Mentor and train junior product managers and cross-functional teams on emerging interoperability trends and API best practices.
