Summary

The Field Inspection Supervisor leads a team of Neighborhood Inspectors responsible for enforcing municipal nuisance, zoning, and housing codes while ensuring consistent, fair, and effective application of city ordinances. The supervisor coordinates enforcement strategies, guides inspectors through complex cases, and partners with departments such as Fire, Police, and the Law Department to resolve property compliance issues that impact the community. In addition to field oversight, this role drives continual performance improvements by developing employee training programs, improving inspection processes, and providing program oversight within the division. Through strong leadership, technical expertise, and collaboration, the Field Inspection Supervisor helps ensure Wichita’s neighborhoods remain safe, well-maintained, and aligned with the City’s nuisance, zoning and minimum housing code standards.

Workdays and Hours - Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm.

Anticipated starting salary: $61,184.00 - $84,984.00 (based on experience and qualifications)

Examples of duties

Serves as the direct supervisor to half of the Neighborhood Inspection field staff.
Works with the various programs overseen by Neighborhood Inspection as assigned by the Neighborhood Inspection Administrator.
Coordinates activities with other agencies, to include the Law Department, WFD and WPD.
Supervises inspector case preparation and may appear in court when legal action is required to gain compliance with ordinances and regulations.
Prepares reports of actions, maintains records, and answers citizen inquiries.
Refines or develops processes, procedures and protocols as needed for continued operational efficiencies.
Develop and continuously update in-house training and development materials for existing and new inspectors.
Represents Department at meetings with other Departments and/or agencies involving regulations within the scope of his/her enforcement responsibilities.
Reviews and drafts recommended code changes.
Other job-related duties may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications

Thorough knowledge of local ordinances, code and regulations and a basic knowledge of Kansas State Statutes that drive local code enforcement dialogues
Ability to supervise others and manage work to achieve objectives
Ability to read and interpret ordinances, codes, and regulations
Ability to traverse rough terrain and tolerate airborne nuisances associated with construction sites; rotted or uneven flooring; ascend and descend steps and ladders; bend and stoop and/or crawl as necessary to look into or under building crawl spaces, cellars, attics, and foundations.
Ability to load, unload, carry, set up, and break down a ladder weighing approximately 35 pounds
Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, other employees, representatives of other organizations, and the public
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
Ability to acquire and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license

Supplemental information

Required Experience and Training

Three (3) years of experience in building or housing code enforcement, including demonstrated experience in interpreting and applying municipal codes such as nuisance, zoning, and minimum housing ordinances or in enforcing the property maintenance codes.
Three (3) years of experience conducting inspections for building construction, code enforcement, housing, or code enforcement.
One (1) year of experience in building construction, construction contracting or inspection work.
Completed Departmental Zoning Level I Exam.
Completed Departmental Housing/ Nuisance Exam.
A valid Kansas Driver’s license.
Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship.
