About the role

Administration:

  • Responsible for Laboratory Operations for section and/or assigned shift.
  • Ensures that all personnel policies and practices are followed.
  • Assist in formulating goals and objectives for Department.
  • Establishes and implements policies and procedures in collaboration with associated Departments throughout the organization.
  • Interviews, hires, disciplines, and fires personnel as appropriate.
  • Prepares and administers performance appraisals.
  • Oversees work schedules, to assure adequate staffing is available to complete the workflow.
  • Authorizes overtime as necessary.
  • Prepares various reports for assigned committees and Management as requested.
  • Assumes administrative responsibilities for other areas as communicated by site Manager.

Technical Operations:

  • Acts as a technical resource for instrumentation.
  • Evaluates new procedures and instrumentation for implementation. 
  • Oversees technical performance of section assuring that results are accurate and turn around is optimal.
  • Develops and reports workload statistics to the Site Manager.
  • Reports Quality Control, Proficiency Testing and Quality Improvement issues to site Manager as requested.
  • Maintains and ensures procedures are performed according to SOP.
  • Ensures result review is performed and associated problems are resolved.
  • Responds to telephone inquiries off hours.
  • Ensures that technical manuals are in compliance with all regulatory agencies. 
  • Performs duties of testing personnel as needed.
  • Cover any open shifts.

Budget:

  • Assists Manager in preparation of budget (salaries and hours, supplies and purchased services)
  • Monitors and justifies monthly variances.
  • Identifies areas for cost savings within the section.
  • Recommends and justifies capital purchases.  Identifies and aids in the justification of new/replacement instrumentation.
  • Recognizes and communicates revenue opportunities.
  • Performs cost analysis for new or existing tests as appropriate.

Inventory:

  • Oversees purchasing of supplies. 
  • Implements and maintains an Inventory Control System which minimizes cost and improves productivity.
  • Seeks mechanisms to purchase supplies in a cost-effective manner.
  • Evaluates new instrumentation/equipment/product purchases as directed by the Site Manager.

Communications:

  • Attends hospital wide committees and staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Communicates laboratory and site issues to site manager.   
  • Chairs regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Promotes shared values and shared governance throughout the organization.
  • Actively initiates and responds to incident and occurrence reports. Communicates
  • findings and solutions to site Manager.
  • Meets with vendors and technical representatives regarding operational needs.
  • Interfaces and cooperates with other lab management personnel.

Competency Testing:

  • Aids in developing protocols to satisfy regulatory requirements.
  • Works with other coordinators and management to ensure compliance.
  • Provides remediation as indicated.
  • Participates in in-services as required.

Regulatory Compliance (CAP, CLIA, JCAHO, FDA):

  • Updates and monitors laboratory compliance with regulatory agencies.
  • Coordinates self-inspections and onsite inspections with Manager.
  • Assures all QA/QC logs are reported, reviewed, and maintained as required by regulatory agencies.

Safety Criteria:

  • Ensures all staff are in compliance with OSHA, Fire, Disaster, Right to Know and Infection Control policies.
  • Maintains a safe environment in accordance with hospital policies and other regulatory agencies.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of and practices departmental safety procedures, including safe handling of hazardous.
  • Demonstrates practice of institutional, patient, and personnel safety procedures.
  • Complete the mandatory annual training programs addressing those areas appropriate to the section as defined by Human Resources.

Education and Training:

  • Must meet current CAP requirements for a laboratory supervisor
  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, or in a physical, chemical, biological, or clinical laboratory science and 5+ years in high complexity testing in CLIA/CAP environment
  • ASCP certification or equivalent highly preferred
