2024 Summer Intern - Data Science Automation

Department Summary

The Data Science Automation group works on some of the most challenging problems in the bioinformatics groups dealing with processing of terabytes of data. We work to enable highly efficient and distributed pipelines for deriving useful insights from data coming out of nanopore sequencers and other data sources. The group works on generic tools to manage, version and track data at scale, as well as develops the pipeline frameworks to enable efficient and massively parallel computations. We also works on advanced data visualization tools involving billions of data points.

This internship position is located in Santa Clara, on site. 

Key Responsibilities

• Collaborate with different team members to understand the project requirements and main challenges to address

• Breakdown the project requirements into research and computational problems

• Research, formulate and communicate possible solutions to the problems identified with the team

• Implement the computational solution decided by the team as most promising.

• Document and create the project report and present it to the team.

Program Highlights

• Intensive 12-weeks / 6 months / 12 months , full time (40 hours per week) paid internship.

• Program start dates are in May/June (Summer)

• A stipend, based on location, will be provided to help alleviate costs associated with the internship. 

• Ownership of challenging and impactful business-critical projects.

• Work with some of the most talented people in the biotechnology industry.

Who You Are (Required) 

• Must be pursuing a Bachelor's degree,

• Must be pursuing a Master's degree,

Required Education:

• Computer Science

• Data Science

Minimum Requirements:

• Computer Science core knowledge ( Data Structures, Algorithms etc. )

• Knowledge of Python or one solid programming language.

Required skills:

• Familiar with git and Github.com source code version control

• Knowledge of Databases ( such as mongodb, postgres sql, neo4j  etc. )

• Data Science Computation Frameworks ( e.g. pandas, numpy, scipy etc. )

• Experience with cloud computing environments such as GCP or AWS.

• Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.

• Data Pipeline Technology ( airflow or nextflow, any other pipeline framework is a plus )

Relocation benefits are not available for this job posting. 

The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location for this position in California is $22.00 - $50.00 per hour.  Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position also qualifies for paid holiday time off benefits.
