The Senior Research Scientist, Small Scale Manufacturing’s principal responsibility is to manufacture batches of intermediates and APIs under cGMP protocols.

Supervisory Responsibilities
This role has a potential to supervise research scientists, and/or mechanical or production technicians.
Responsibilities
- Execute contract projects independently. Document and report results of development and experimentation to Department Head
- Develop and evaluate new chemical process technology and methods. Introduce, optimize, validate and support new processes into the laboratory, kilo lab, plant, or pilot plant facility
- Develop strategies to optimize production processes with respect to yield, quality, throughput, cost and minimization of waste streams. Implement programs as required to optimize processes and resolve issues
- Prepare laboratory and kilo-scale quantities of materials
- Provide technical coverage of pilot and commercial scale-up manufacturing as required
- Find new and better ways of performing job by challenging established procedures
- Troubleshoot sourcing and/or stock quality issues that may affect production quality or timelines
- Assist in scheduling regular maintenance for all equipment to ensure that it is maintained according to SOPs including calibrations and any preventative maintenance needed
- Represent the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects as well as providing answers to questions related to scale-up knowledge, cGMP procedures, and Curia policies
- Maintain knowledge on previously executed programs to serve as subject matter expert when processes are then transferred to other Curia production facilities. Attend regular meetings for these programs and answer questions related to production and results
- Manage workload and time to perform multiple projects effectively, and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed on a timely basis
- Manage all aspects of a cGMP manufacturing campaign, including batch record review, safety evaluations, material procurement, equipment ordering/set up/cleaning and execution of the chemical operations
- Perform execution of projects within tight timelines to maintain customer and internal demands. This often requires operations outside of a regular 40 hours/week
- Assist in troubleshooting activities including running additional experiments, data mining, or literature searches
- Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices. Learn the particular hazards associated with all chemical processes that are assigned and take the appropriate precautions to setup equipment properly and execute all operations safely
- Supervise and train junior staff and/or production or mechanical technicians, as appropriate
- Write interim and final production reports as required
- Coordinate production schedule with other departments including Quality Assurance, Analytical services, and Chemical development
- Create and update cGMP SOPs as needed per guidance provided by quality personnel and Quality Assurance
Qualifications
Education, experience, certification and licensures
Required- Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field
- Minimum 5-8 years’ relevant experience with APIs
OR
- Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field
- Minimum 3-6 years’ relevant experience with APIs
OR
- Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field
- Minimum 0-3 years’ relevant experience with APIs
