The Sr. Database Application Engineer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining database applications to support the company's data management needs. This role focuses on utilizing advanced technical skills to design solutions, ensure data integrity, and optimize application performance. The Senior Database Application Engineer collaborates with cross-functional teams to analyze requirements, design efficient database structures, and implement robust applications.
Essential Functions:
- (70%) Design and develop database applications, ensuring user requirements are met and adhering to agreed-upon timelines.
- (10%) Provide technical support on SQL Servers and core technologies such as Windows servers to customers, enabling them to effectively use and optimize database applications.
- (10%) Monitor database application operations, conduct root-cause analysis of issues, and implement solutions to maintain system performance and minimize downtime.
- (5%) Collaborates independently with business customers or project business analysts so that business requirements can be converted into successful technical designs and business needs can be adequately planned based on messaging throughout and availability standards.
- (5%) Responsible for expanding breadth and depth of technical skills and business knowledge in order to increase contribution to development efforts.

Essential knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent technical experience
- 5+ years of experience in SQL Server Database Development
- Advanced proficiency in Structured Query Language (SQL) with expertise in advanced SQL constructs, including T-SQL
- Strong experience with SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS), SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), and SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS)
- Strong understanding of data modeling concepts and ability to design efficient database structures and experience with data modeling tools such as ERwin or ER/Studio
- Experience with developing and optimizing database applications using tools like Oracle, MySQL, or Microsoft SQL Server
- Proficiency in query optimization and performance tuning techniques
- Experience with ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes and tools
- Experience with database administration tasks such as backup and recovery, security management, and capacity planning
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot database application issues
- Strong verbal and written communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with stakeholders and team members
Desired knowledge, skills and abilities:
- Experience with other RDBMS platforms such as Oracle or MySQL
- Experience with programming languages commonly used in database application development, such as Java, C#, or Python
- Familiarity with cloud-based database services like Amazon RDS or Azure SQL Database
- Knowledge of NoSQL databases and unstructured data management
- Technical certifications related to database management and application development
- Insurance, Reinsurance and Financial Services experience
- LOMA or other Business certifications
Travel:
- 10% - Overnight travel to HLRUS office locations and/or Hannover Re office locations to work with colleagues and/or business customers.
Total Compensation Range (Inclusive of Base + Bonus) :
- $112,900 - $152,700
