Non-Certified Deputy = $45,000
Certified Deputy = $47,500
Education and experience can increase starting pay.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The purpose of this position is to enforce all local, federal and state laws relating to public safety and welfare of animals; to perform general animal control work, responding to calls for service; To keep the animal shelter clean and maintained. The position works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed frequently by supervisor. The purpose of this position is to enforce all local, federal, and state laws relating to the public’s safety and welfare in the County. Conduct vehicular patrols in designated County areas, maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems in the neighborhood, and respond to emergency service calls.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Enforce local animal control ordinance
2. Interact and serve the public in taking in animals.
3. Work intake desk dispatching calls to officers.
4. Vet animals to prepare them for adoption, and get them healthy.
5. Determine adoptability of animals on holding side.
6. Ensuring shelter is clean and disease free.
7. Work animal neglect and animal at large complaints
8. Euthanizing unwanted, sick and or injured animals.
9. Pick up stray animals including setting traps.
10. Prepares cases for prosecution; provides court testimony as necessary.
11. Performs general law enforcement duties as necessary, including but not limited to patrolling assigned areas of the County, responding to public calls for assistance, maintaining order and public safety, apprehending and arresting suspected law violators and criminal suspects, collecting evidence and participating in investigative operations.
12. Performs routine service duties, including but not limited to, assisting stranded motorists, directing traffic, providing security and crowd control at special events, etc.

Additional duties include:
Manage supplies/inventory. Testify in court for felonies and misdemeanor cases in the magistrate court and general sessions court. Ensure proper recording of evidence collected from crime scenes. Continue training throughout the year.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of South Carolina Code of Laws;
Knowledge of policies and procedures of the Oconee County Sheriff's Office;
Knowledge of state and county laws pertaining to animals
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word and Excel)
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing
Knowledge of how to handle friendly and feral domesticated animals
Ability to pick up from Jail and supervise 2-9 inmates at any given time
Need to know the state animal laws and county animal control ordinance
Need to be able and catch animals that are running loose
Go to court and testify for cases
Qualified to operate various assigned weapons;
Ability to work extended hours and remain on-call for duties;
Physical and mental abilities for known law enforcement work and in apprehending suspects;
Knowledge of County roadways and communities;
Customer service and interpersonal skills;
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The educational requirement for this position is: Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by the successful completion of the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
Education may not be substituted for experience.
Related-experience required: Requires a short demonstration up to and including one month.
Experience may not be substituted for education.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR REGISTRATIONS:
Certifications, licenses, professional designations, or other qualifications required for this position include:
- Training seminars on handling and capturing animals.
- Must possess a valid state driver’s license.
