The Communication & Signals (C&S) teams design applications that enforce protections of train movements for safe operations.  These applications encompass the signals and switches along the rail, the locomotive technology, and their wireless communication layer.  The primary application is Positive Train Control, PTC.

As an intern working with the Positive Train Control team, you will assist System and Data Engineers confirm that rail signals, switches, and locomotives are effectively protecting certain train movements through onboard system testing and data analysis. 

System testing will allow the intern hands-on operation of a virtual locomotive to verify system requirements are met. 

 

Data analysis will allow the intern the opportunity to build both tactical and strategic dashboards exhibiting the effectiveness of the involved systems.  Example analysis includes: 

  • Onboard System – evaluate train crew interaction with the software, locomotive faults, speeds, train tonnage over geographical areas, or fuel efficiency impact 

  • Wayside System – evaluate radio signal reception in geographic areas or asset uptime metrics by manufacturer 

  • Back Office Server – evaluate dispatcher and train crew system integrations and verify risk mitigations of the closed systems 

  

Work Location: Our Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia  

 

Education/Experience 

  Pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master’s Degree 

  • Preferred Degree Paths: Business Administration, Business Analytics, Management Information Systems, Business Administration - IT, BS Industrial Engineering - Analytics 

  

Compensation 

  • Freshman Year (27 or fewer credits): $3, 716 

  • Sophomore Year (28-59 credits): $4,034 

  • Junior Year (60-89 credits): $4,326 

  • Senior Year (90 or more credits): $4,600 

  • Graduate Student: $5,484 

 

Other Pay/Benefits: 

  • Pay one time roundtrip mileage for out of area students 

  • $425/bi-monthly housing stipend for out of area students (Not prorated)
