A Brief Overview
The Executive Director, Foundation Business Operations serves as a trusted advisor to the Vice President, Development Administration and leads the overall strategy, management, and delivery of the Development Department's business, staffing, and financial functions.

The Executive Director manages a team of 20 that is responsible for department-wide budget planning and management, office administration, onboarding and learning, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion)/culture strategy. This role is accountable for promoting operational excellence and efficiency in these areas, including through collaboration with partners across the enterprise. The Executive Director is responsible for spearheading special and strategic projects on behalf of the Vice President, Development Administration.

In addition to managing daily operations, the Executive Director must be able to adeptly lead change initiatives, manage messaging, build buy-in from key staff, understand and acknowledge reasons for resistance to change, and deliver on promises and timelines. The Executive Director must think strategically and proactively to meet the quickly-evolving business requirements of a complex fundraising organization in a fast-paced industry.


What you will do

  • Business and Financial Processes
  • Working closely with EVP, AVPs, Finance, and Development program directors, provide administrative oversight of budget process for the department and anticipate all budget reporting. Oversee financial management of the Department.
  • Drive the Department’s financial stewardship measures and involvement in cost-savings initiatives.
  • Develop relationships with Human Resources, Finance, Supply Chain, Legal and other key functional areas throughout the hospital to optimize development office compliance, effectiveness, and efficiency following hospital guidelines.
  • Supervise team that handles office management, including supplies, mail, ensuring a comfortable and clean office environment, monitoring conference room reservations and usage, and ensuring all equipment is in working order.
  • Project Management, Process Improvement, Change Management
  • Guide the ongoing development and adoption of the department’s project management system (Workfront), as well as internal consulting on process improvement efforts.
  • Establish, communicate, and implement operations-related policies, practices, standards to ensure effective and consistent support and execution. Ensure policies and procedures are documented, communicated, and understood.
  • Lead, manage and drive special projects, presentations, or programs in alignment with hospital and department strategic priorities.
  • Suggest or recommend projects/initiatives that support strategic or operational objectives as needed.
  • Plan, execute, and oversee the implementation of change management strategies to support administrative/operations-focused projects, taking into account organizational culture and resources.
  • Staff Engagement, Performance, and Culture
  • Partner with Human Resources to support the design and execution of comprehensive talent acquisition and management initiatives to effectively identify, attract, hire, and retain diverse, top talent to meet the current and projected needs of the department.
  • In partnership with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, ensure the department maintains and operationalizes a clear DEI strategy that aligns with and advances CHOP’s priorities.
