About arXiV:

Started in August 1991 and located at Cornell University since 2001, arXiv.org is an open access research sharing platform for scholarly articles. The e-print repository has transformed the scholarly communication and knowledge dissemination of multiple fields of physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, and statistics, electrical engineering, systems science, and economics as new subject domains. arXiv is a global resource, with 70% of institutional use coming from countries other than the USA.

arXiv resides in Cornell Tech with staff and faculty collaborations spanning the Ithaca and New York City campuses. Synergies between arXiv and Cornell Tech include cutting edge research on the technical challenges of scientific communication and collaboration, such as how to build better recommender systems using advanced machine learning, the societal aspects of computing and data science, human-centered design, platform content moderation, and social networks. 

We are in the midst of  a three-year project, arXiv Cloud Edition (or arXiv CE), through which we will migrate all aspects of the arXiv system to the cloud and modernize our code base. The goals of arXiv-CE are to improve stability and capacity, ease expansion into new subject categories, allow easier integration with other services, and otherwise prepare arXiv to be able to support the future needs of the communities we serve. We are currently assembling the team that will work on successfully completing this ambitious project.

We are looking for an experienced cloud devops engineer to automate our cloud deployment processes.

Reporting to the arXiv Technical Director, the DevOps Software Engineer will participate in the new arXiv development projects and ongoing maintenance. 

• Manage our cloud deployment
• Automate deployments to the greatest extent possible
• Design and implement an “infrastructure as code strategy”, where configuration is managed in git
• Create a CI/CD pipeline for all components, and a process for encouraging developers to implement comprehensive regression suites
• Implement “one-click” deployment of test instances for development and testing purposes
• Devise automated checks to ensure that all checked-in code complies with our coding standards
• In addition to devops responsibilities, the candidate may also be called upon to do general software development
