About the Role

The Government Relations and Communications team is looking for a Temporary Project Assistant who will provide administrative and logistical support and assist with program support to regional and other functional teams. The position will be based in Washington, DC and is a paid temporary (3 months with the option to extend to 6 months) position. The successful candidate will assist with outreach to the U.S. Congress and Executive Branch, and help implement NDI’s external communication strategy. This position is based in Washington, DC and reports to the Senior Government Relations and Communications Manager. The anticipated start date for this position is January 2024.

Your Purpose and Impact: 

  • Produce daily news updates for distribution to the team by reviewing foreign and domestic newspapers, magazines, or journal articles.
  • Research, gather materials and prepare briefs for country or regional specific programs.
  • Attend meetings and seminars on regional affairs and prepare oral and written presentations to team members. 
  • Assist in the preparation and drafting of periodic reports, such as country-specific political and program updates.
  • Assist as needed in providing administrative support to assigned country projects, such as coordinating travel for staff/consultants/participants, processing payment requests, filing/copying/shipping documents, and other tasks related to backstopping field office activities and event planning.
  • Conduct special projects as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in political science, international relations, regional studies or additional years of relevant work experience may be substituted for educational requirement on a one-for-one basis 
  • Knowledge of, experience and interest in the region
  • Strong attention to detail with experience prioritizing and managing multiple tasks
  • Excellent writing and interpersonal skills
  • Experience with event planning and managing logistics is strongly desired
  • Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired

Parameters

  • Incumbent operates under general supervision, receives direction on most processes and methods and is assigned most work. 
  • Incumbent regularly interacts with staff at all levels within NDI.  
  • Some interaction with external funders and partners is required when necessary to support the provision of information or clarify information necessary for program operations and administration activities.

  • None required. 

Work Environment:

  • This position generally is performed in an office environment and may be suitable for partial telework. 
  • Occasional evening and weekend work may be required, as well as attendance at external events. 

Physical Requirements:

  • Sitting/mobility—to work at a desk and move around work areas. 
  • Speaking/hearing—to engage orally in conversation with others. 
  • Seeing—to effectively use a computer screen and for reading and interpreting printed materials, memos and other paperwork. 
  • Reaching/handling—to input information into computer systems and retrieve and work with appropriate paperwork, equipment and supplies and complete filing.

To be considered for a Temporary Project Assistant at NDI, you must have completed a Bachelor's or Master's degree. The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Bachelor's degree is $17.00.  The hourly rate for candidates with a completed Master's degree is $18.00. 

*Please note – temporary hires at NDI are paid hourly, are classified as non-exempt, and are therefore eligible to receive overtime pay. Temporary employees are not eligible for benefits, including insurance and retirement plan benefits, and paid time off. Temporary employees of NDI-DC are not represented by the NDI Union.
