The pay for this position ranges from $110000 - $125000.
Overview
We are currently seeking a highly motivated Sr. Mechanical Engineer with demonstrated design and manufacturing expertise to join the multi-disciplinary Advanced Technology team responsible for developing novel fuel cell-based systems for hydrogen production, carbon capture, and power generation applications. This position requires working with engineers and designers to come up with new designs and follow them through from concept through verification, and construction through testing and validation within a system.
Responsibilities:
- Develop and utilize mathematical models to aid in design of fuel cell components and fuel-cell based systems
- Leads technical discussions and review meetings with interdisciplinary project team using informative, concise slide presentations and dialogue Analyzes designs utilizing a combination of engineering calculations, computer-aided engineering tools (FEA software such as Nastran or Ansys), and/or analyses of test data.
- Advises selections for a range of materials including high temperature metal alloys, ceramics, and insulation.
- Designs custom equipment and managing the fabrication process to ensure delivery of high-quality equipment in accordance with the project schedule.
- Participates in dFMEA and pFMEA activities to ensure design and assembly process risks are identified and mitigate to acceptable levels.
- Reviews engineering design documentation including P&ID’s, technical reports, mechanical fabrication drawings, vendor supplied specifications, and design review slide decks.
- Ensures that systems are developed in accordance with best safety practices. This includes participating in Hazard and Operability Analysis (HAZOP) reviews, as needed.
- Prepares technical reports and presentations to communicate designs/results to internal and external stakeholders.
- Act as a mentor toward junior engineers and assists in training and teambuilding.
Qualifications:
Education: B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field required.
Experience: Requires a minimum of 8 years of relevant work experience.
Required Experience and Characteristics:
- Detailed and applied knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA), solid mechanics, material science, heat transfer and design stress allowances. CFD experience is a plus.
- Proficient 3-D CAD part and assembly modeling skills with Inventor, SolidWorks, or similar programs.
- Strong understanding in the fundamentals of mechanical design stress allowances, fluid mechanics, and heat transfer.
- Able to create and/or review detailed build-to-print engineering drawings considering availability of materials, manufacturing processes, packaging, and cost issues, especially for metal fabrications.
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment and take initiative on projects.
- Highly knowledgeable of equipment fabrication processes – especially brazing, welding, and sheet forming.
- Experience with product development life cycle, from conceptual design to product release and engineering change notification process.
- Excellent oral, written, and presentation communication skills to work effectively with others in sharing ideas and scientific findings.
- Knowledgeable of major industry codes and standards is a plus (ASME BPVC, NFPA 70, etc.)
Working Environment/Working Conditions:
- Desk work using a computer, at home and office as needed. Position is onsite-hybrid with allowance for 2 days a week from home.
- Meetings occurring on-site and via virtual means (Teams, Zoom, etc.)
- This position is located indoors and requires ability to move between separated rooms in same building.
- Occasional work outdoors in a power plant environment during commissioning activities. Performs occasional field or in-house test facilities work.
- Be able and willing to wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as designated such as safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hats, respirator, and other PPE as required.
