Summer Camp Unit Leader

Description

Unit Leaders oversee the Camp Counselors assigned to their unit and provide programming for their unit. Due to close contact and overnight supervision of a Girl Scout minor girl population in this residential setting, the Unit Leaders must be female.

Key Responsibilities 

• Plan and lead unit programming. 
• Assist in the development of program curriculum for at least one specialized activity area, evening activities, and one all camp activity.
• Maintain a stocked first aid kit for the unit, report accidents and any changes in campers’ health status promptly.
• Wake campers on time and communicate proper attire for the day.
• Teach camping skills and appreciation of the outdoors to campers.
• Meet regularly with the Summer Camp Units Supervisor and fellow Unit Leaders. 
• Coordinate with fellow Unit Leaders for housekeeping, sanitation, and care and use of supplies/equipment. 
• Assist in the execution of the GSHPA crisis management plan for emergencies that may occur during camp at any time, day or night.
• Keep written records of the Summer Camp units and unit programs, make formal reports, and submit within established deadlines.
• Abide by GSHPA code of conduct, rules, and expectations. 
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Minimum 20 years of age.
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous supervisory experience preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to motivate girls to participate in activities and lead activities in a flexible, professional manner.
• Attend and complete pre-camp trainings.
• Experience working with children preferred. 
• Ability to quickly respond to emergencies 24/7 when on camp property and follow GSHPA established emergency procedures.
• Ability to live and work in the outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to walk a mile over uneven terrain.
• Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards.
• Ability to adapt well to changing circumstances, direction, and strategy.
• Ability to work with diverse populations in a group setting.
• Strong verbal communication skills.
• Must be able to pass required background checks.
• Must present a current form of ID affirming female gender at time of hire.
• Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
• Ability to lift at least 50 lbs.
