Summary

The Maintenance Intern is a temporary role providing broad work experience in performing a variety of maintenance tasks of limited scope and complexity while under instruction. Interns will rotate through various work assignments, especially during outages. Under the guidance of supervision and their assigned mentors, interns will develop job skills. In addition to work experience, this program will help participants learn about the duties and responsibilities of various maintenance crafts in order to help them to make career decisions. While at the plant, interns complete training on industry-related topics.

In addition, interns also complete designated college courses on industry-related topics.
 

Minimum Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED
  • At least 18 years of age
  • Current Arizona resident.
  • Must have completed ENG101 or be eligible to enroll in ENG101 based on achieving an adequate score on the college's pre-qualifying evaluation
  • Must be able to satisfy applicable NRC, security, physical and psychological requirements to work within the protected area
  • EEI MASS test administered

Preferred Special Skills, Knowledge or Qualifications

  • Good mechanical aptitude with knowledge of basic hand tools
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Desired qualifications of course work and/or vocational training in electrical, HVAC, mechanical, machining, welding, or instrumentation and control
  • Basic computer/keyboard skills
  • Basic arithmetic and High School algebra skills

Nuclear requirement

Any PVGS employee may be called upon to serve as a member of the Emergency Response Organization (ERO) and will be expected to fulfill their obligation as an ERO member. Any PVGS employee may be called upon to support a refueling or short-notice outage. This includes line roles and responsibilities as necessary to execute outage activities. These are conditions of employment at PVGS.

Major Accountabilities

1) Embraces the Palo Verde safety culture, including:
using Prevent Events tools, participating in pre-job briefings, reporting unsafe conditions, using personal protective equipment (PPE), avoiding injury, avoiding contamination, observing "As Low As Reasonably Achievable" (ALARA) strategies and demonstrating safety awareness.

2) Sets high goals and seeks out opportunities to achieve results, including:
maintaining a positive attitude, using self-checking, demonstrating professionalism, avoiding security violations, observing the "Do It Right The First Time" philosophy, using the right tools for the job and demonstrating skill and ability with hand tools.

3) Works effectively with the team and other work groups, including:
working positively with others to achieve common goals, working together to ensure safety and quality and demonstrating a positive attitude while working with others.

4) Maintains effectiveness in varying environments with different tasks, responsibilities and people, including:
working well with others, participating actively in training, providing feedback, attending as scheduled, maintaining a positive attitude, adapting to changing expectations of various departments and responding positively to unexpected changes.

5) Expresses ideas clearly and effectively, including:
having a questioning attitude, using the phonetic alphabet in communications when required, using three-legged communications when required, and maintaining open lines of communications with mentors.

6) Demonstrates keen desire to learn and understand, including:
arriving on time to assigned duties, having a questioning attitude, and demonstrating willingness to listen and take direction.
